New boy Simpson hits debut winner

By

Evo-Stik League Division I South Market Drayton Town 1 Rainworth 2 Report by Les Lee

RAINWORTH overturned a 1-0 interval deficit at Market Drayton on Wednesday night to win 2-1 and climb out of the bottom two.
The Wrens fell behind against the run of play in first half stoppage time when Mark Hales went up for a corner but dropped the ball behind his own line.
However, in direct contrast to Saturday's defeat by Lincoln United, it was Rainworth who turned the game on its head with two early second half goals.
First Matt Baxter slotted a penalty after Chris Hewitt was brought down in the area, and then two minutes later new boy Daniel Simpson, signed from Premier Division Frickley, outpaced his defender and beat the advancing Drayton keeper.
There was controversy in the 55th minute when Drayton appealed strongly for a penalty. A home defender carried his appeal too far and was sent off.
Rainworth played some excellent football in 4-4-2 formation, and could and should have won by a bigger margin.
Debutant Kyle Gee-Pemberton had an excellent game on the right and Hewitt ran his socks off partnering Simpson up front, while Cameron Fearon and Tommy Hannigan were superb in central defence, and Mark Camm, playing midfield, showed his class.
The first quarter of this six pointer was fairly even with both sides winning two corners each but defences dominating.
Rainworth’s first effort came following some attractive crossfield passing ending with James Jepson shooting past the far post.
Then in the 25th minute Hales’ long clearance fell to Hewitt who rounded his man, only to see his finish go behind off the bar.
Simpson had an effort cleared off the line following Jepson’s free kick, and Drayton broke immediately, however Rob Paling was alert to clear the danger.
Drayton then enjoyed a spell on top, winning a free kick which was knocked into the area. Martyn Davies’ header was tipped over by Hales, and the ensuing inswinging corner just cleared the bar.
In the first minute of added time Drayton won a corner, and Hales went up for Tom Rogers’ inswinging kick but allowed the ball to drop over the line, giving the hosts a lead they hardly deserved.
However, the Wrens were quickly out of the traps for the second half, and when Hewitt broke into the area three minutes in he was unceremoniously pushed over. There were no complaints about the penalty from the home side, and Baxter stepped up to hit the net with confidence.
Boosted by the equaliser, Rainworth began to carry the game more to Drayton, and a fine run down the right by Gee-Pemberton saw him pick out Hewitt in the area> He laid off intelligently for Jepson whose shot just cleared the bar.
However, another neat build saw Jepson find Simpson outside the area. An electric burst of pace left his marker chasing shadows, and Simpson gleefully marked his debut, slotting past the advancing Andy Pryce.
A couple of minutes later came the controversy which led to the home side being cut to 10 men. Fearon’s attempted clearance of a corner saw the ball apparently strike his hand, but it was a clear case of ball to hand and referee Mr Kuzmanovic was unimpressed by Drayton’s penalty appeals.
Paul McMullen carried his protest too far and was promptly dismissed, as was the home assistant manager from the dugout.
With the man advantage Rainworth pushed on in search of the killer goal, with Simpson and Hewitt both bringing good saves out of Pryce.
And, following another pleasing interchange down the left involving Jepson and Ryan Carolan, Baxter found the space for a shot which was blocked. The rebound fell to Gee-Pemberton who was unable to follow Simpson’s lead in scoring a debut goal, firing justg wide.
The home side pressed in the final 10 minutes but, apart from Hales punching a corner clear, they were unable to break down a resilient back four with Fearon and Hannigan dominant.
