Unbeaten Run Continues

By

Rainworth went into last night’s match away at Albion Sports hoping to extend their three-match unbeaten run.

They knew the enormity of the task having been beaten 3-0 by the same team at home just one month ago.

Last night it was Albion who created the first chance when Ben Townsend did very well to push out Daniel Facey’s effort in the 5th minute.

Rainworth’s first effort came two minutes later courtesy of a lay-off from the referee, the ball having struck him, but Tomas Poole’s effort was just wide of the upright.

Albion went even closer on 10 minutes when from a corner they hit the post, but Rainworth managed to clear the danger. At this stage of the game Albion were having the better of the exchanges.

Rainworth began to find their rythmn and in the 13th minute Poole’s long-range effort was only gathered by the keeper at the second attempt.

Rainworth were denied the opening goal on 19 minutes when an excellent full-length save by the keeper, at the expense of a corner, prevented Nathan Modest’s fierce drive from crossing the line, after Matt Sykes had set him up.

Albion still carried a threat and a mazy run by the left winger ended with his effort going well over. They were fortunate however, to still have eleven men on the pitch when in the 33rd minute Niall Smith’s quick break was cynically ended by a blatant trip, by what appeared to be the last defender. The referee brandished just yellow, deeming there were defenders in close proximity of the incident. Poole almost punished them from the free-kick, but the effort was inches over.

On 43 minutes Albion should have taken the lead when their left winger rounded Townsend, but fell over and put the effort wide with an empty net beckoning.

The last effort of the half fell to Rainworth when Sykes’s cross found Modest, but his shot on the turn was inches wide with the keeper well beaten.

Rainworth started the second half on the front foot and a quick break in the 52nd minute saw the keeper brilliantly tip Syke’s effort around the post for a corner. Rainworth made their first substitution bringing on Brad Wilson for the injured Poole. From the resulting corner Max Pemberton rose above everyone to open the scoring.

This was the signal for a sustained period of Albion pressure, but Rainworth were more than up to the task. On 66 minutes Rainworth brought on Alex Nightingale, for his debut, replacing Modest.

Albion’s pressure told n the 77th minute when the ball found Facey on the edge of the area, his shot took a deflection, giving Townsend no chance for the equaliser.

Parity lasted less than a minute when straight from the kick-off a Rainworth attack saw the ball reach Sykes and his shot across the goal found the far corner to restore Rainworth’s lead.

The game was now end-to-end with both sides creating chances, but with neither side able to find the finish.

In the dying minutes Smith’s effort flew inches past the upright with the keeper well beaten.

Rainworth made their final substitution bringing on Kieran Barnes for Liam Royles.

In injury time Albion tried everything to try and rescue a point but Rainworth were more than equal to the task and at the final whistle they had deservedly won 2-1.

On Saturday they entertain Thackley at home, attempting to equal the best unbeaten run of five since their return to the NCEL from the Evo-Stik. On current form you wouldn’t be surprised if they achieved it.

RAINWORTH MWFC: Townsend; Ludlam; Smith; Booth; Ross; Pemberton; Royles (Barnes); Poole (Wilson); Modest (Nightingale); Walker; Sykes.
