Today at The Recreation Club ground, Pickering, the home side led in all those stats but in the end, were grateful that Jack Waddle’s 58th minute strike had hit the underside of the bar, bounced on the line and was cleared, in a 3-2 victory.
Any hopes Rainworth had of naming an unchanged side after Tuesday night’s impressive display against Staveley Miner’s Welfare were dashed when they had to make three changes due to illness and unavailability. Not ideal when you have travelled 100 miles to play the league leaders.
As early as the 4th minute Ryan Blott signalled his intent when from a quick corner his goal bound effort was deflected for a corner.
The went even closer on 11 minutes when Jordan Claxton’s goal line clearance prevented Pickering from taking the lead.
At this point it was all Pickering and the pressure was relentless with Russell Parker and Joe Danby both putting long range efforts well over.
Then in the 20th minute from a corner the danger looked over when the ball cleared everyone, a moment lapse in concentration by the Rainworth defence allowed Blott to gather the ball, with his effort beating Ben Townsend at the near post.
On 24 minutes a great run by Parker was wasted when his effort on goal went well wide.
The first threat on the Pickering goal came in the 36th minute but Nathan Modest was just beaten to the through ball by Michael Clancy.
At the half-time whistle it was only Pickering’s woeful finishing that was keeping Rainworth in the game.
Pickering continued the second-half like they finished the first and in the 53rd minute Joey McCormick’s shot on the turn was only inches the wrong side of the far post.
Rainworth almost equalised in the 55th minute when Clancy did well to block at full-stretch Waddle’s goal bound effort. Minutes later and he went even closer when his shot beat Clancy but hit the underside of the bar, bounced on the line and was cleared.
In the 62nd minute Clancy needed two attempts to gather Rob Ludlam’s effort. Pickering broke quickly on the counter-attack and Lewis Taylor hit an unstoppable shot past Townsend for their second.
Rainworth made their first substitution in the 67th minute bringing on James Munson for Liam Royles.
A minute later yet another Pickering counter-attack saw Blott beat Townsend at the near post for their third. A couple of minutes later he almost got his hat-trick, but his effort was deflected for a corner.
Pickering were now in a rampant mood and Townsend did well to block Danby’s goal bound effort. At the other end Ludlam’s long-range lob beat Clancy but landed on top of the net.
Rainworth reduced the deficit in the 75th minute when Joshua Ross’s excellent 35 yard free-kick beat the wall and Clancy’s despairing dive.
Rainworth second substitution on 78 minutes saw Bryan Dakouri replace Modest, they made their third on 81 minutes bring on Luke Walker for Kieran Barnes.
In the final minutes Denny Ingram’s effort was tipped around the post by Townsend.
As the game entered injury time, Munson’s through ball put Dakouri in on goal and he coolly stroked it past the advancing Clancy.
There was just time for the kick-off as the referee blew for full-time.
