When a very youthful Goole turned up, the fans expectations were raised even further, but football is an unforgiving game and by the end of the night Rainworth’s record against them hadn’t improved. We will never know what would have happened if from a Danny Buttle corner in the second minute, Nathan Modest’s header had hit the back of the net instead of a defender on the line. Shortly afterwards a Goole through ball was deflected into the path of Chris Ovington and his clinical finish did the rest.
With the score at 1-0 Rainworth always had a chance but Goole’s fast breaking attacks were a constant threat and in the end they would prove terminal. Just before the half-time whistle, Jamie Brown’s shot was gathered at the second attempt by the keeper. However on the balance of play, Goole were good value for their one goal lead.
Rainworth brought on Callum Lloyd and Jordan Claxton, but in the 55th minute they were undone again by the quick break. Once again the pin-point through ball beat the high line and found Nathan Guest, who coolly rounded the keeper to score the second. Rainworth briefly threatened the Goole goal when Lloyd’s shot was saved and cleared.
Goole were starting to over-run Rainworth and after a number of near misses it came as no surprise when substitute, Matt Semley scored the third and final goal of the game. The score line was a fair reflection of a dominant Goole performance on the night. Rainworth must regroup and hope that tonight’s performance was just a ‘poor day’ at the office, if Saturdays game at home against Chasetown, ends the same way, it will be cause for concern.
