Reading Abbey RFC is the leading family friendly rugby club in Reading and the surrounding areas, drawing players from a wide area.
Minis rugby from U6s to U8s is non contact tag rugby. We offer children a fun introduction to rugby in a safe environment with sessions run by RFU qualified coaches who have been DBS/CRB checked. We focus on enjoyable sessions that consist of games (not just rugby but games like bulldog); training exercises to learn the game of rugby and develop skills; and fitness work.
Rugby is an excellent sport because it is suitable for children of all builds and backgrounds. It teaches children team work and discipline. Most of all it is a great outlet for letting off steam.
The club is affiliated to the English RFU and Premiership teams, London Irish and London Wasps.
All Mini rugby takes place on a Sunday morning. Some days will be only training others will also include training and matches against local teams or festivals/tournaments. After training children and parents are welcome to socialise in the club house where hot food is served throughout the morning and the bar opens after training at 12 noon.
New players are always welcome and your child can try for 4 weeks before you are asked to pay membership fees. Training starts at 10am prompt so please arrive in plenty of time. If you are coming for the first time, please check with me that we are at home that Sunday. The U7 training area is normally the opposite side of the drive to the club house and just before the first main pitch as you head back towards the road. (However, pitches can change so please check the board inside the clubhouse). Myself and the other coaches are normally there or around the club house from 9.30 onwards to welcome you and your children. You can try out for 4 weeks to see if you like it. Please also check our fixtures or with me that we are at home.
If you bring your children along, please make sure that they have suitable equipment. My suggestions are: football or rugby boots – please avoid blade type boots and go for studs (metal studs are best); warm cloths and a water proof top if possible but avoid zips or hoods as these can be dangers; and a bottle of water to keep hydrated.
