Almost immediately a needless free kick was given, and after talking before the match of their main threat and how o deal with it, we completely ignore the instructions and allowed a free header for the big number 9 for Steyning to make it 1-0
The game was then played in stops and starts, no real quality from either side. The width that Rustington normally posses was non –existent, as was any quality on the ball when in possession.
Rustington did mange one passage of play, when Steve Kirkham and brother Chris combined well, which allowed Chris to be one on one and he neatly lobbed the ball over the on- rushing keeper to make it 1-1
HT 1-1
Sadly the second followed the first, and it didn’t take long before another cross found its way the Steyning winger whose miss-hit effort seemed to loop over Charlie Gammons in goal.
Rustington began to finally work a little harder, but by no means as hard as they should. The pitch was very boggy, but Rustington just looked lethargic all over the park.
Steyning capitalised on some poor defending to score a 3rd, that had a hint of offside, but in all honesty it was what Rustington deserved.
Ft 1-3
“Today was very disappointing – sometime s you can carry 3 maybe 4 players who play badly, but when the whole team plays badly then you have no chance at all. we were not competitive at all, and that is the minimum that I ask of the lads, yes it is difficult after having a long wait between games, and you do lose momentum, but it is the same for every team, so that is not an excuse”
“It was a bad day all round and one we need to draw a line under and move on”
