Walden win final pre season game.

By

Another good result boosts confidence ready for the start of the league campaign.

On a fine Sunny day with the pitches looking in great condition Walden played host to both Huntingdon firsts and second teams in front of good crowd.
The first 10 mins was a bit scrappy as both teams settled in and it was the visitors first to score as they found space out wide from a good attacking move to go 5 points in front.
Gradually Walden got into the game, starting to string phases together and eventually a couple of quick passes saw left winger Oscar Norman in a bit of space and he ran 40 metres along the wing before the fullback got across 15metres out to make the tackle but he off loaded off the ground to flyhalf Paul Marshall who in turn found captain and centre Mark Kimberley on his shoulder to go in unopposed for a converted try. 7- 5 20 mins.
Walden then extended their lead with 2 tries by Norman, the first from a good break by second row Charlie Potter and then a try from close range as Walden dominated the last part of the half even though Huntingdon got one back from an intercept just before half time. Score 17- 10.
Walden swapped a few players around at half time but continued to pressurise the visitors with first Alex Pakenham-Walsh going over after only 2 minutes of the half played.
Walden's next try came when again after several phases Full back Tom Price chipped over the top 20 metres out and Kimberley was first to the ball as it rolled over the try line to score his second.
Then No 8 Matt Holden got in on the act when he reacted quickly to a loose ball outpacing the defenders to score under the posts. Walden's final score came when centre Doug Olaga dived over to put the home team 41 – 10 points ahead after 62 mins.
Walden then made a further 2 changes and were soon disrupted again when flyhalf Marshall had to go off with a cut on his eyelid.
Huntingdon took advantage after a penalty kick to the corner and after a good driving maul scored their 3rd try.
Walden experimented by deliberately going down to 14 players to simulate a Yellow Card for the last 10 mins and the visitors scored twice to narrow the gap to leave the final score at 41 -29.
To compliment the first team result the Saxons won their game resoundingly by 90 points to nil to prove that there is strength in depth to the overall squad.
Both teams should be bolstered by some returning players and are looking forward to starting next weeks league campaigns with the Firsts facing Romford and the Saxons playing Cambridge 3's, both 3pm kick offs
Please come along and support the teams and the club.

We are always on the look out for new players to play either in the first team in London 2NE or the Saxons (2nd team) in Eastern Counties 1West, if you are interested in joining our friendly club please contact either info@swrfc.co.uk or graham.marshall2@ntlworld.com
