Sat 20 Jan 14:00 - London & SE Division - London 1 North Full time

Walden come so close to the result they needed.

By

Despite some determined defence Ruislip score on the last play to win the game.

Deja Vu for Walden as Ruislip win with the last play of the game for the second time this season.
In Cold wintery conditions Walden knew that they needed to win the game to enhance their chances of getting out of the Relegation zone and they started strongly. With only 5 minutes on the board they attacked from deep feeding the ball out to left winger Rob Booth who raced down the touch line and with the full back coming across chipped forward. 2nd Row Ben Stapleton was on to the ball and fly hacked it over the try line and dived on it to score under the posts. Full back Tom Price converted and Walden were 7 points up.
Then 8 mins later Walden doubled their lead as once again a good backs move saw centre Mark Kimberley find himself in space and with right winger Adam Miles on his shoulder he cut inside to beat his opposite number to score another converted try.
Despite the poor conditions Walden looked to use their wide players but the strong Ruislip pack started to come into their own dominating the scrum, going forward using driving mauls from the line outs and they worked the ball into the Walden 22. From a 5 metre line out they drove over to narrow the gap to 14 -7. Then with only 2 minutes left in the half they scored their second try with some one out plays that eventually told on the Walden defence to leave the score at 14 -12 at half time.
The second half started with Walden receiving the ball and after a couple of phases they kicked it long deep into the Ruislip half. A great kick chase by Booth put pressure on the Ruislip full back and he made a mistake, the winger was first to the loose ball hacking it on under the posts to score stretching Walden's lead to 21 – 12.
Ruislip came back with a converted try and Walden gained a penalty in front of the posts to leave the score at 24 – 19 with 20 minutes to go.
Ruislip had the upper hand in the closing quarter of the game and despite some valiant defence Walden could not clear the ball out of their half. The visitors fourth try came when they once again used their well drilled one out plays to drive forward sucking in the Walden players to create an overlap going over near the corner to level the score at 24 each.
Then heartbreak for Walden as Ruislip used the same tactics and despite some determined efforts to turn the ball over it was not to be and the visitors scored under the posts with the last play of the game to leave the final score at 24 – 31.
Walden should be proud of their efforts right up to the final whistle but will know that getting enough points in the league to escape relegation will now be difficult. But one thing that can be certain is that they will fight to the end and if they show the same determination as they have in the last 2 games then with a change of luck it is possible.
Walden travel to Watford next week to play mid table Fullerians.

We are always on the look out for new players to play either in the first team in London N1 or the Saxons (2nd team) in Eastern Counties 1West, if you are interested in joining our friendly club please contact either info@swrfc.co.uk or graham.marshall2@ntlworld.com
