Sandown & Shanklin RFC defeat visiting Tottonians RFC 2nd XV 107 - 7

Compared to the conditions the week before, Saturday 29th September was set up for champagne rugby and the Hurricanes supporters were not denied that with the resulting game. Sandown & Shanklin have been the leading light so far this season, and looked to continue their lead in the Hampshire Premier league ahead of what will be a big period for the club in the coming weeks.

The afternoon started quickly for the hosts, who managed to notch up 10 tries in the first half alone. Man of the match Jack Wedderkop secured his hat-trick within 30 minutes of the game. Hooker converted to blindside flanker Zak Chiverton, and winger Josh Wetherick both notched a double as well in the first half. However it was Sam Tyson and Luke Hunter who got the scoring underway with their tries at the start, and Cameron Mitchell getting a score of his own. It was all the way of the Hurricanes however, as Totts managed a score of their own around the half hour mark. But it was little to stop the momentum of the home side, who lead 64 - 7 at the break.

There wasn't much let up in the second half for the visiting Tottonians, who conceded a further seven tries; with Wetherick and Chiverton both completing their own hat-tricks, Mitchell bagging a double and Wedderkop scoring his fourth of the game. Forward man of the match Harry Hopper got a score of his own, to reward the work he was putting around the park. The final two tries of the game came through some neat skills, firstly some great handling to put Owen Williams into space. Then secondly, after being fed the ball by Williams, Charles Little stepped inside the final defender to get a score of his own. Captain Sam Flux kicked 11 out of 17 conversions, leaving the final scoreline 107 - 7 to the hosts.

Director of Rugby Damion Marriott reflected on the game with his thoughts below:
“It was a crazy game. We were loose at times but equally at times we played some brilliant, brilliant rugby, so I don't need to be too downbeat. We scored 107 points, and some brilliant tries, played some fantastic and at times totally unstoppable attacking rugby throughout that could be a match against anyone”

"I think today it felt the most connected we've been in attack, it felt that we had options on both sides of the ball. Sam Tyson and Cameron Mitchell were both instrumental in that, their ability to unlock the defence was extraordinary.

"We made some sloppy errors and gifted them a try, that, we need to cut out next week against Millbrook. It was a little bit frustrating at times when we came away from our attacking game-plan and started playing some individual stuff, killing so much of our momentum. Yet, the lads took it on board and finished the game strongly."

The Hurricanes welcome Millbrook RFC to the Fairway next weekend (Saturday 6th October), beginning a stint of games which will dictate the season for the 1st XV.
