Selby Under 11s - Tigers Challenge 2012 Champions

By Adrian Hartman

Selby Under 11's travelled to Skegness Butlins over the weekend to take part in the first Tigers Challenge festival, run in conjunction with Leicester Tigers and Skegness Rugby Club.

Two pool games were played on the Saturday morning with Selby victorious in both beating Market Rasin and Leicester Forest 5-0.

After a late Saturday night and been submitted to some of the coaches singing in a karaoke bar the boys started well winning Dunstablians 10-0 and Melton 5-0. With 4 our of 4 wins the final beckoned with the top two in the pool playing each other, Market Rasin had 3 wins with only been beaten by Selby on the first day.

The match started at a brisk pace with Selby scoring an early try but with confidence on their side and the knowledge that they had already beat the opposition the previous day Selby took the foot of the pedal. With complacency the mistakes crept into Selby's game and were punished a few minutes later by a dancing run through the Selby defence by a Market Rasin back to bring the scores level 5-5. This was the first try Selby had conceded all weekend and was just want was required to kick start the team back to life.

Straight from the kick off Selby had Market Rasin where they wanted and with the pressure from the forwards soon won the ball back and a quick move down the backs Selby scored into the corner on the half time whistle 10-5.

After a quick team talk Selby came out fired up, with the forwards now showing what they could do they started to over power the tiring Market Rasin team in all areas. Two quick tries, coming from the forwards winning the scrum resulted in fast hands and pace down the line and over the line 20-5. With Market Rasin on the back foot and Selby playing some fantastic rugby it was inevitable that they would score again 25-5.

Both sets of players were a credit to their clubs and battled on the the final whistle with the Market Rasin players not letting their heads drop at any point in the Match, well done to them all for fantastic afternoon of rugby.

In the evening presentation, Joe Bell was awarded the Special moment award who was singled out by the Leicester Tigers referee for making a try saving tackle in one of the pool matches.

A great evening was capped off with the presentation of the Champions trophy by Tigers flanker Tom Armes and former Welford Road favourite Freddie Tuilagi.

Well done boys.
