Sheffield 3rds welcomed Sheffield Oaks 2nds to the Abbeydale sports ground for the first Derby of the season.
Sheffield fielded a strong side with Jack Ward captaining from 9. The squad also contained James Hall from the senior colts set up. After another shaky start, replicating last week, with Sheffield Oaks scoring under the posts in the first five minutes, Sheffield thirds managed to score twice before halftime with tries through Steve Connelly and James Hall.
Steve Connelly caught a beautifully weighted miss pass from fly half Rory Duncan, showing pace and strength to run around and through three Sheffield Oaks players. James Hall then came on half way through the first half, replacing the unfortunately injured Steve Connelly, to make a perfect senior debut by finishing off a sweeping move to score with his first touch in a senior game.
Sheffield thirds went into the second half applying more pressure on Oaks, scoring early through Steve Connelly, who had come back on after receiving a knock in the first half. Although Sheffield thirds took a backwards step with Captain Jack Ward receiving a yellow card for “uncharacteristically” mouthing off to the referee.
Sheffield thirds managed not to concede any points in the second half and scored three more tries, with Steve Connelly completing his brace. James Hall went on to score two more, completing a Hattrick of tries off the bench in what was his first senior game, playing out of position at inside centre.
The Match ended with Ben Broomhead finishing off a try from halfway, receiving a lovely inside ball from Richard Hague. Scores at the end being 41-8, Bonus point win, Tries for 6, tries against 1.
The 3rd team bandwagon continues to roll on!
