The Greens made three changes to the side which lost 4-1 at home to Dereham Town on New Year’s Day with Ashley Bankole, Dan Hobbs and captain Callum Russell returning to the side, with both teams coming into the fixture on the back of a run of defeats.
The game was given the go ahead following a morning pitch inspection, with the hosts making the better start on a wet pitch as Leahy rose to head over from an early Dicks’ delivery into the middle of the area. After twelve minutes, Nyanja received the ball just inside the area, however after going wide of Pope was denied by a well-timed Russell challenge, with the keeper making a one handed save to keep out Salmon’s header from the resultant corner. However a minute later Bowers opened the scoring when the unmarked Manor, having collected the ball towards the back of the area from a corner, played it into the middle of the six-yard allowing John Easterford to convert from close range. The hosts continued having the better of the play with Sartain, Easterford and Nyanja all having opportunities before further increasing their lead twice in the final five minutes of the half; Fahad Nyanja doubled the score in the 40th minute when he received Manor’s left sided cross, placing his shot wide of the advancing Pope into the bottom corner, with Lewis Manor heading in Dicks’ corner from close range deep into stoppage time.
Soham made tactical changes at the interval with Gardner, Connor and Cohen all being introduced with the Greens creating a number of early attacks without testing Chafer. Ten minutes after the restart, Pope twice made saves to deny the hosts, firstly making a full stretch save to keep out Knight’s low shot, before tipping over Leahy’s rising shot, whilst Easterford headed over from another corner, and Knight saw a curling freekick come back off the woodwork. Soham’s first meaningful effort on target came fifteen minutes from time when Clayton flicked Russell’s cross goal wards, however the shot stuck in the mud in front of goal with Stokes getting back to clear from in front of the line with Bowers scoring a fourth five minutes later when Pope pushed Ashman’s angled shot away from goal, but into the path of Nyanja, who headed into an empty net for his second of the afternoon. As the game moved into injury time, Ashman and Dicks placed efforts at Pope, whilst Clayton twice came close to getting a consolation however put his shot just wide from Kaye’s throughball, before being kept out by Chafer with a low strike.
