Barkers Butts Tanners 17 - 39 Southam 2s

By Mike Haville

Phil Nichols Southam 2's win the Warwick League 2 on the last game of the season with a decisive victory

Southam started well keeping the Butts in their own half with rock solid tackling and some strong runs from centre Ryan Stephens and wing forward Dylan Pink. They got on scoreboard after 10 minutes with a penalty on the 22 for not releasing, converted by fly half Josh Tolley. 5 minutes on, wing Bay Toner ran the ball back into the Butts 22 and Southam pressure forced the scrum, Tolley set off and barreled through the defence to roll over for the try, converted by Tolley. Butts were getting aggravated that they could make no headway against the Southam defence and lost their number 6 to red card for punching. 26 minutes in, from a Butts scrum in their 22, captain Phil Nichols scragged the Butts scrum half, Southam took possession and spread to centre Joe Bagshaw, who weaved through the line and then rounded the last man for the try near the posts, converted by Tolley. Southam did not deal with the kickoff and Butts secured and quickly spread and their centre rounded the Southam defence for the try. Tolley nearly made it through again, as he took scrappy ball in his own half, but still managed to weeble through the Butts pack and was just brought down by the last man. As the half ended Toner took the ball in his own half and punched up the touchline into the Butts 22, the last man brought him down, but Toner laid off the ball nicely to youngster Russ king, who was surprisingly in support and he ran in for a try under the posts, converted by Tolley. Tolley finished the half with penalty, for offside at the ruck, with another 10m for mouth.
HT 5 - 27

Butts started hard, hitting the Southam defence, but were denied early points with some superb cover tackles by Bagshaw & Stephens, but 5 minutes in the Butts centre broke a tackle in the centre and went over for a converted try. 20 minutes in, it all went off, when the frustrated Butts started punching, this led to their number 7 being red carded for bad behaviour and wing forward Finn Toner, being yellowed for just being in the area. The game restarted and Southam continued to pound the Butts line, 35 minutes in, centre Charlie Munro got the ball on the halfway, jinked through the defence and gassed all the way to the corner for the try, converted by Tolley. Butts got one back, but Southam had the last as they camped in the Butts 22, with strong runs from No8 Barney Galiffe, prop Matt Catterall and wing forward Finn Toner. Captain Phil Nichols had the last word as he sneaked in for a try, when nobody was looking, from a quick tapped penalty for a lung bursting 5m try.
FT 17 - 39

A fitting finish to a fantastic season for the 2's, with 18 wins to take the league and so nearly a cup, with a narrow loss in the Clonmell cup final (don't mention Tolley missing touch). Lead by inspirational captain Phil Nichols, who does not know the meaning of 'no or can't' and seems to have a phone book a mile long. Well done lads and here's to next season.
