A fantastic display for the Chairman's Day crowd

On Gary Gilkes well attended Chairman's Day, Southam started at such a pace that by the time some of the guests had come out of the clubhouse, Southam were 17 - 0 up. Southam were away from KO with a good take in traffic from prop Matt Catterall, the ball was spread wide and centre Will Wood broke and got into the Old Eds half. The ball was recycled and a late tackle on fly half Harry Hewson, saw a 'kick or kick' penalty, which captain Will Grindal converted. 6 minutes later, a strong tackle from centre Tom Grimes on the OE's 22, saw him steal the ball, step out, broke two tackles and scored, converted by Grindal. Two minutes later and Wood broke from the half way, stepped a couple handed off another and deep in the OE's 22, laid of to the supporting Grindal, who ran in for the try and then converted it. 17 - 0 up after 10 minutes a fine start. OE's tightened it up then and Southam went into defensive mode and kept the OE's out of their 22 for multiple phases, a half hour in, from a penalty Hewson kicked Southam up to the OE's 22, from the line out the forwards drove into the middle and fed Grimes, who made ground, the ball was recycled and Grimes drove once again, through the tackles and through for his second, converted by Grindal.
HT 24 - 0

From the kick off, the forwards pressed hard, the ball came free and hooker Sam Deeming stole it, the ball was recycled and Deeming made ground into to the OE's 22, the ball was recycled again and fed to grimes who pierced the line, freed his arms and put Grindal in for his second and he converted the bonus point 4th try. Southam made some changes and came off the gas a little and had to put in some hard defensive time for the next 20 minutes until Wood stepped out of the line on the Southam 22, intercepted and ran 70m for the try under posts, getting away from the last man with well timed hand off, converted by Grindal. The game won, Southam lost a little concentration and let OE's back into the game and after 27 minutes, a mismatch and missed tackle in the middle, let OE's in for a converted try and then in a good position, 3 on 2 closing in 10m from the OE's line, Southam let the OE's full back run past and he made ground all the way deep in to the Southam half and laid off for the converted try. Southam put up some strong defence to deny OE's another and Southam had the last when Wood broke out again, making 50m with wing Sam Bench in support, but denied for a forward pass.
FT 38 -14

A fantastic display for the Chairman's Day crowd, showing what this young team is capable of.
