First Team beat Lymington 42-33

By

SRFC ended their season with a scrappy, high scoring, bonus point win away at Lymington Mariners.

Due to bad weather and a lack of Lymington players earlier in the year, SRFC had to travel down for a rearranged fixture on Easter Saturday. As has been a trend with the last few games, SRFC had a strong team out but were lacking consistency and experience in the midfield partnerships. This led to a successful but unstructured game - although this wasn't helped but an unstable SRFC scrum.

The game started with a mess of an attempted kick off from flanker-come-fly half for the day David BJ, but having won the scrum and attacked from the halfway line scrum from David to make up for his mistake to run through untouched. He converted his own try under the posts and SRFC looked like they were going to have an easy day.

Lymington returned the compliment by also sending their kick off at least 3.7m. Another scrum on the centre spot. However a good kick from Lymington's fly half and some, possibly arrogant or complacent, play from winger Kenny Baughan in attempting to run the ball back led to Lymington winning the ball and making their way through to even up the score.

The story of the first half was poor high tackling from SRFC but many great breakaways from counter attacks. Both Kenny and David made multiple breaks from inside their own half and Josh Rihan and Monty both penetrated the Lymington line every time they had the ball. The most embarrassing moment was big centre Tiago Dias breaking through the line destined to score a great try when he decided he wanted to run over the Lymington full back - amazingly the full back managed to strip the ball and stop the try. SRFC did manage to score a couple of phases later though. 14-14 half time.

The big talk at half time was about increasing the aggression and lowering the tackles. None of this happened at Lymington broke through to go 21-14 up.

SRFC's fitness was starting to prevail and the tries did start to come but this was more down to individual quality than team control - this can be blamed on Head Coach Tom Morton being off having tea and cake at a rounders match and Forwards Coach Sheridan Easton off skiing.

The real positive was the goal line defence at the end to stop Lymington getting a losing bonus point. For the last few minutes the boys threw their bodies in front of anything that moved and held strong. A bonus point win and 42 points is a great way to end the season and shows real potential for this team next year! 42-33 to SRFC.
