Teams were restricted to a maximum of 8 players, with 6 per side plus 2 subs. To try and maximise the number of players that could play we entered 5 teams; Lions, Tigers, Wildcats, Pumas and Leopards.
As always, we had Colin Durrant and Jamie Rudd managing the Lions. Their team included sons Ollie and Jamie, plus Max G, Sam, Leo, Finley and Ethan. I don’t have much info on the Lions games, other than the first 2 games ended in defeat, but they came roaring back with 3 straight victories and 3 clean sheets, with 3 goals from Ollie and 2 from Ethan. Man of the Match went to Leo.
The Tigers were managed by Darren Varley and Ian Hepworth, and in their team were sons Noah and Lukas, plus Jack T, Austin, Oscar R and Alfie. Their problem of late has been scoring goals, but not a bit of it this time. They rattled in no fewer than 6 goals, which helped secure 2 wins and a draw from their 5 games, with Noah netting the first and then Alfie the other 5! Not surprisingly, this earned him the Man of the Match award!
The Wildcats were managed by Andy Cook and Roy Crocker, whose team consisted of sons Eliot and Josh, plus Jamie, Zaya, Jonas, Jacob and Archie. The team got off to a slow start, but gradually improved to secure 2 hard-fought draws (1 versus Lakeside), before finishing the day in style with an excellent 2-0 win over Quedgeley. Archie, Zaya and Eliot were scorers on the day, with Jamie taking home the Man of the Match medal for a solid performance in defence.
Leading the Pumas we had James Jackson and Ian Goodall, their team was made-up of sons Will and Tate, plus Oscar J, Leonidas, Tobi and Teddy (U7). They were (almost) all-conquering, finishing the day with 4 wins and a draw from their 5 games, with no goals conceded. Leonidas helped himself to 4 goals, with Tate adding a further 2, plus 1 from Will. This was a group that contained some very physical teams, but the Pumas gave as good as they got on an outstanding day for them. Man of the Match was Teddy, who kept 3 clean sheets, but also was tremendous in defence when he played out on the pitch.
The Leopards were managed by yours truly and was made up of players from the other 4 teams. To make it fair, I chose those that were last to confirm their availability, so we had Lennie from our U7 Cubs as our keeper, plus Max W, Joseph W, Zain and debutant Antosh. With a couple of boys not being available on the day, it meant I had to beg, steal & borrow from the other teams to make up the numbers, so Tobi, Tate, Jonas, Jacob, Oscar J, Lukas, Leonidas and Noah all took a turn at helping out. We lost the first game to a penalty, which was the very last kick of the game after Tobi had put us in front in the 1st minute. We won then won 2 of the next 4 games, both by a 1-0 scoreline, with Jonas and Noah the match-winners. It was hard to get any consistency when our team was different for each game, but the Leopards put up a really good showing. Man of the Match was Lennie, who played really well in every game, but the save in game 2 to preserve our lead, when he tipped a piledriver over the bar, was truly outstanding.
Each of our teams performed well on the day, they all won games and they all scored goals. Most importantly, they all had a great time! Next up is the tournament at Churchdown on June 9, look out for details soon.
