This match was hastily arranged last minute and even though we travelled to Ipswich's ground the combined Ipswich&Hadleigh team only managed to muster 11 players. Their Stowmarket colleagues did not show! Whereas we had a squad of 14 including Harvey and Tom from the U16s.
We agreed to play 12 aside with 6-man scrums and leant them initially a player and then two players when one of their lads went off injured!
Southwold were firing on all cylinders for the first 20 minutes with great rucking and straight running. The result was Elliot Burnett scoring a hat trick and Charles Buckley getting all three conversions.
By half time they had managed to get two unconverted scores back as we took our foot of the gas.
Our foot remained off the gas for the 3rd quarter apart from an 80+ metre try from Guy Blade bursting through the centre defenders inside our 22.
Ipswich&Hadleigh managed to edge in to the lead with 10 minutes left and despite Tom (U16s) getting a try back we were still 3 points adrift with a minute or two left so Charles elected to forego the conversion to save time. Thanks to another strong run from Guy combining with William Anderson (not for the first time) deep in our own half we managed to score and convert in the last minute.
The clock then seemed to stop and they had time to restart and there were a few nervous moments as we had to keep them out. Which we did.
MoM were Ashley May for his work behind the pack but also in the loose, Billy Esling for his jumping in the line (for the first time) and work rate around the park and finally Will for both his defence (covering the fullback position) and his attacking play.
Clearly Elliot and Guy's 5 tries deserve special mention as does Charles's leadership, marshalling and 100% success rate on conversions. Also special thanks to Matty, Tom (U16s), Harvey (U16s) and Max who all played for the opposition at some point to help create a game.
25 lads got a runout today rather than slobbing on the sofa - so rugby was the true winner today. well done lads
