Doncaster ladies visit a determined Thirsk ladies 1sts.

By Mike Rushmere

It was expected to be a hard game taking on third in the table.

Having lost the away match earlier in the session Thirsk knew they had their work cut out for them from the start. Fresh from their Easter break the Thirsk ladies started with an air of confidence which was reflected in an early goal put in by Cathryn Barrett. Thirsk were on fire and showed moments of magic. As the time passed possession went more towards Doncaster and thanks to some great defence work from the Thirsk defence and some badly drilled short corners the first half finished one nil to the home team. Having had a track record all season of leading at half time and finishing second at the end of full time there was a lot of apprehension in the home team. Doncaster put the pressure on and they started to accumulate short corners! Marianne Maurice the Thirsk goalie was put under immense pressure and defended her goal fearlessly with the steadfast Ella Durkin supporting her alongside Grace walker. Doncaster managed to eventually open their scoring despite some relentless defending! With the score at 1 all both teams seemed to loose their mojo and an air of flatness descended. Both teams had to dig deep and ask themselves who wanted it the most. Thirsk opened the opportunity for the long legs of Megan Allan to slip into the D for a beautiful goal however she was not able to convert it awarding herself the tart of the match for fluffing it so beautifully. Doncaster let themselves down by their lack of creativity with their short corners but Thirsk battled on eventually winning a short corner with less than 10 minutes remaining. Captain Spanner took the first shot but left it to Bea Bell to fire home the winning goal. Doncaster were unable to respond and the whistle blew for a 2 - 1 victory for Thirsk. Ella Durkin was awarded Man of the match. Her physical awareness and ball control was a pleasure to witness but there was no doubt the victory was a real team success and one they deserved to enjoy.
