U13 Girls National Regional Championship 2017

By Mike Rushmere

Thirsk U13 girls in the winning team.

Thirsk H C had five girls representing the North East of England Regional Hockey Team at the National Championships: (L to R) Yasmin Marshall, Poppy Lawson, Minnie Pollock, Holly Pears and Holly Riddell.
They won all their group matches; the semi-final finished in a 1-1 draw which the girls went onto win through penalty shuffles. The final finished in an incredibly tense 3-3 draw and so went onto penalty shuffles again. Poppy, Holly P and Minnie all stepped up to take and successfully convert which helped the team to be crowned National Champions! The whole team played fantastically and it was amazing to see the girls come together from all across the region to show what a talented pool of girls we have in the North East.
Results were: v North West: 3-2 v North Wales: 7-0 v Midland Marauders: 4-1
Semi-final v West Panthers: 1-1 (won on penalty shuffles)
Final v Tensworth: 3-3 (won on penalty shuffles)
The team was jointly coached by James Pollock (THC) and David Brereton (WHC).

More good news as well - out of the near 150 girls at the tournament Holly R, Holly P and Minnie were all selected for the 18 strong squad for the U13’s England Lions Team – a fantastic achievement for the girls and the club.
