An excellent start by Thorne. Having finished in 4th place in the two previous seasons Old Modernians were expected to provide stiff opposition for Thorne's opening game back in Yorkshire 3. Right from kick off Thornensians showed their intent of playing hard running 15 man rugby and looked really up for the game. It took just 2 minutes for Thorne to get their first points on the scoreboard when after several phases of forwards power play captain James Fenwick scored a try under the posts, leaving Thorne's number 10 Tom Holt with a simple conversion. It took just a further 3 minutes for Thorne to get their second try. Receiving the ball on the oppositions 10 metre line Holt burst through two tackles, side stepped a further 2 players to score a superb individual try. With a successful conversion to follow Thorne were 14 - 0 up after just 6 minutes. On just 9 minutes of play Thornes 3rd try came from number 8 Ryan Pilley, Holts conversion making it 21 - 0.
To their credit a shell shocked Old Modernians did gather themselves and for the next 15 minutes stepped up their game. Competing well in the breakdown they secured much more ball and managed to get points on the board through a successful penalty kick. It wasn't long however before Thorne stamped their authority back on the game and with tries coming for hooker Scott Berry and fullback Tom Ambler and 2 further conversions by Tom Holt Thorne would finish the 1st half 35 - 3 up.
Whether it was a case of Thorne taking the 'foot of the pedal' or fitness levels not quite there yet the second half turned out to be a bit more of a sedate affair. Old Mods had the lions share of the first 20 minutes of play putting the home side firmly on the back foot. However, Thorne did defend their lines very well and gradually got a firm grip back on the game. A try from prop Martin Moffat on 60 minutes and one from winger Ross Haley following a superbly measured kick from Rob Brown sealed the win. Two further conversions from Tom Holt added 4 more points, giving a final score of 49 - 3 and giving the number 10 a 100% kicking rate.
