Best all-round team performance in a few seasons, sees Bongs take all five from league leaders

What a result. Tyldesley have had some memorable wins over the years, and this one is up there with the best, given the quality of the opposition, in their own back yard, who sit top of the table with just one very narrow away defeat all season.

Not many would have expected Bongs too get anything from this fixture, a point of any description would have been considered very rewarding; but too come away with a bonus point win, was unbelievable and fully deserved, after a very spirited and determined team display, even, when at times, all looked in vain.

Thanks must go to Broughton Park, for the kind words published in their match day programme regarding Bills passing, along with the minute’s silence, respectfully observed by all connected to the club.

Despite the horrible conditions, beforehand, the pitch was in good condition, and with the bad weather holding off, for the duration, all witnessed a superb contest, with both teams giving it their all, throughout.

All didn’t start well, two tries conceded inside the first ten minutes, had most probably thinking this was going to be very one sided affair.
BP threatened straight from the kick off, when ex Bongser, Jack Williams, received the ball, before cutting through the visitors defense, enabling him to make a good twenty five meters, thankfully possession was eventually lost, and with it the threat, but only temporarily.

The hosts continued to push Bongs back, via some excellent attacking rugby, which bore fruit in the eight minute, after their pacey winger finished of some neat backs play, conversion missed.

Straight from the restart, Broughton Park recorded a second score, which in many ways was a rerun from the start of the game, but this time they finished the job off, without a hand being laid upon them, conversion missed 10-0, nine minutes played.

Although still on the back foot, Tyldesley started to defend with purpose, which forced a few mistakes in the host’s attack, resulting in a well struck converted penalty, from Martin, minutes after their first visit into Broughtons half.

With just over a quarter of the game gone, Tyldesley had pulled their opponents back to just two points, after Dickinson put the ball in to space for Berrisford, who gathered, before touching down, conversion missed.

Broughton extended their lead to seven, after charging a Tyldesley kick down, twenty meters from the visitor’s line, with their right winger, keeping hold of the ball, before touching down for his second, conversion missed.

Bongs refused to go away and hit back with a second Martin Penalty on the half hour, and then went in front six minutes later, for the first time, but it didn’t last long.

Dickinson provided another clever kick into space, but an attempted intercept, directed the ball slightly, towards the intended target, Berrisford, who collected well, before dancing his way through, for a great try. Martin added the two. 15-18

Like all quality sides, Broughton came straight back, and recorded a forth bonus point try, with the half all but up, conversion added. Half time 22-18.

One thing that was evident throughout the first forty and continued during the second, was Parks ability to strike from almost anywhere on the field. So, could Bongs manage to stay in tough, or would a courageous first forty take its toll, as the game progressed.

Tyldesley started the second period on top, and had the upper hand for the first fifteen, which started with them taking a scrum against the head, which boosted confidence.

Good pressure by the Bongs forwards gained hard yards, but a solid home defense stood firm, never the less, Bongs kept plugging away, which gained a penalty.

Martin struck the ball well from thirty five meters out, but regrettably it hit the crossbar, and bounced back in play, keeping the pressure on, which gained reward three minutes later, putting Bongs back in front for a second time.

Neat interplay between forwards and backs created some space down the right hand side, Dickinson shook of a couple of defenders before giving the ball too J Kirkpatrick, who after some excellent footwork, turned the ball back inside, towards Dickinson, who finished off some quality rugby, Martin dissected the sticks. 22-25

With the game approaching the hour, Tyldesley conceded four quick penalties which gifted Broughton easy meters, going from their twenty two, too within five meters of Bongs line without breaking sweat.

Finally the inevitable happened, with a fifth try being conceded, conversion added, giving the hosts the lead back. 27-25.

The next few minutes, was all park, who applied pressure upon pressure, and despite some very brave defending, it looked like the visitors gallant efforts was just going to fall short.

Although tiring, excellent Tyldesley defending, gained two relieving penalties, putting them just outside the hosts twenty two.

Bongs protected the ball well, via a few pick and drives, edging them closer and closer towards the line, D Twizell, then picked from the base, before burying his way under and touch down for a bonus try, conversion missed, putting them back in front, for a third time. 27-30

Suddenly, the game was there for the taking, however there still remained thirteen minutes of this superb contest.

Tyldesley retained the ball, via twenty excellent phases or so, and although not making much ground, play was deep in the opponents half.

A Cross-field kick resulted in Bongs being caught offside, which handed possession back to the hosts, who then kicked for touch, from the penalty awarded.

From the line-out, Park looked set for another onslaught, but a loose pass was brilliantly intercepted by Dickinson, who broke clear, before crossing for his second and Tyldesley’s fifth try of the contest, conversion missed, 27-35 with just five left on the clock.

As expected, Parks quality shone through, yet again, after great support play and quick handling, the hosts crossed the whitewash for a sixth try, conversion added.

Just a point, now separated the sides, with two minutes left, but Tyldesley remained relatively calm, sending the ball deep, from the restart, with play finally ending in the hosts half of the field, as the refs whistle finally brought an end to this very, very entertaining game, which had everything from start to finish.

Excellent wins for the seconds, who beat Upper Eden 48-0 whilst the recently promoted thirds came out on top, in their first outing in their new league,20-16 in a close contest v Sedgley Park, winning the game with the last play.

Obviously, It’s been a tough and emotional week at SGP, but these three great wins brought some cheer, knowing, Mr Green, would have been immensely proud of all three teams.
