Uddingston Rugby Club’s 1st XV played their final home league fixture of the season on Saturday when they hosted title chasing Cumnock at Castle Policies.
While the weather was too moist for the cricket boys to put bat to ball, the conditions were perfect for the oval ball game. Unfortunately for the Villagers, it was Cumnock who shone through, their title credentials obvious to all, easily winning 43-15.
To their credit, the Villagers never gave up, and made life tough for Cumnock for the full 80 minutes. An early try from McMillan gave Cumnock a 5-0 lead but this was clawed back by the Villagers, Gavin Kidd scoring for Uddingston.
A further 2 tries from McMillan and Reilly over the next 15 minutes saw Cumnock stretch their advantage to 17-5 before Uddingston got themselves back in with a well taken try by Craig Lonsdale. With the clock ticking down towards half time Cumnock secured their 4th try, and the bonus point, Park claiming the scoring honours.
At 24-10, Cumnock went into the break with the momentum, but still a fight on their hands to secure the full 5 points. Any concerns they had were quickly shaken off when the second half got underway, Hunter crossing within 2 minutes of the restart. Ten minutes later Reilly secured his 2nd try of the afternoon and the win was almost secured with the score line at 36-10.
Cumnock continued to dominate the match and put the result beyond doubt on 66 minutes when Lowrie scored their 7th try of the afternoon. Last word of the match fell to the Villagers when Dylan Mitchell crossed the line for Uddingston’s 3rd of the afternoon.
The final score of 15-43 reflected the dominance Cumnock held throughout the game, and sees them sitting 2nd in the league table with 2 matches still to play. The Villagers are secure in 5th with their final fixture of the season next Saturday, 05/05, when they travel to face 4th placed Paisley in what is effectively a dead rubber to close the season. Kick off at Anchor Park is 3pm.
