“Eight games played on the day, five ended in draws. Pretty tight!” John Myatt, Team Captain

As the third Wednesday of the month had come around again, it was the Wanderers' 60+ team who were in action in the SY League at Doncaster's Keepmoat Stadium.

The chosen six met again for a pre-match coffee at the Station in Crigglestone, and two cars made the trip down the MI to South Doncaster. One change was made from the previous month's squad, Laurence Watkins replacing the injured Ray Blackburn (no, not a toe injury!)and making his League debut.

The squad was: Laurence Watkins, Mike Thompson, Steve Stoker (GK), John Myatt, Chris Lund and David Holbrow.

Once again the weather was unseasonably mild (10ᴼC), although this did not stop Steve Stoker from wearing his thermals under his goalkeeping kit, and causing comment in the dressing room about his protruding "chest pointy bits"!

It being the week before Christmas (and with the ghetto blaster again missing) Chris Lund led the carol singing with his rendition of 'Silent Night' in its original German! This speeded up our changing routine and all players were outside before he reached the last line of the first verse!

First onto the playing surface, our warm up was effective and intimidating to our opponents. We then watched the first match between Retro Rovers and Barnsley before it was our turn.

Match Reports

Wanderers first match saw a 1-0 victory over Penistone with a goal from Mike Thompson who converted a John Myatt shot which rebounded back from the post.

Our second match followed immediately and resulted in a 0-0 draw with Barnsley Pals. Laurence had replaced John to make his debut, and found the stricter refereeing a challenge. The game was very 'stop-start', mainly for 'running' offences.

Reverting to the line-up from our first match with Laurence as sub, the next match was against Retro Rovers who reversed last month's result and beat us 2-1. Our goal coming from John Myatt.

Three days before the shortest day of the year, the final game was played under floodlights and saw Holbrow replaced by Watkins in the starting line-up against Barnsley. A tight 1-1 draw resulted, with our goal again coming from Mike Thompson. The game was stopped briefly with five minutes to go, when John took a firmly struck shot in a painful place. He limped off to be replaced by the sub, (who was told not to mention the incident in his match report, whoops!).

So a mixed bag of results, four games: one win, two draws and our first defeat. five points attained.
