Waverley Outplayed at Oakley

By

Headline writer can't think of acorny pun...

Having bounced back from a difficult start to win last week, The Mighty Wave headed to Oakley looking to build some momentum and pick up another victory. Turning out for The Wave were James Wright (Mongo), Adrian Day (Mog), Chris Beanland (Beanie), Marcus Carmichael (MC), Simon Brewer (KV), Will Knox (Will, son of Knox), Malorie Short (Malorie), Matt du Gay (Doogs), Andy du Gay (Daddy Doogs), Adam Carmichael (AC) and Peter Brewer (Mr B).

Doogs was once again defeated at the toss, and the visitors were invited to bowl first. Doogs and AC were given the new ball and looked to make an early breakthrough. It was AC who struck first, castling D Jones. He had another wicket soon after, taking a catch off his own to remove J Brundle. At the other end, D Sumner was looking to play some shots and was keeping the scoreboard ticking over for the home side. AC picked up his third wicket, bowling B Lethaby. When Doogs got in on the action and picked up the wicket of Kalum, Oakley were 45/4 and looking like they were there for the taking. A change of bowling at both ends saw Mr B and Malorie introduced. There were a couple of half chances in the field for the Wave, not least a close run out - Mongo throwing in from the boundary and nearly removing D Sumner. Both Malorie and Mr B were unlucky in their spells, both finding a few edges, but without anything sticking. Malorie did pick up her first Waverley wicket to remove A Brundle, AC doing the business to hold on to the catch at gulley. Sumner was making the most of his let off and was finiding the boundary with increasing regularity, pushing the home side's score along at a healthy rate. With both Malorie and Mr B bowled out, Daddy Doogs and Will were introduced into the attack to try and find another wicket. Daddy Doogs struck in his first over, KV holding on to the chance behind the stumps, but that was it for Waverley's wicket taking exploits, the home side finishing on 214 off their 40 overs.

After an excellent tea, the visiting side looked to get off to a quick start, knowing they would have to keep the run rate ticking along to be in with a chance. Mongo and Mog were tasked with getting the innings underway, but Mongo was soon back in the hutch, castled for just 1. Mog and Beanie looked to keep things moving, and a 2nd wicket partnership of 44 looked to have put the Wave in a good position, before Beanie was also bowled, looking to increase the run rate. A mini Waverley wobble saw MC and KV come and go without adding too many runs. Mog sensed that it was a time to kick on, and ably supported by Will, he looked to take on the home side's attack and started flailing a few boundaries. Another patented Waverley wobble followed though when Will was bowled for 9, Malorie was run out for 1, Mog was finally removed for a well made 57 and Doogs chipped one to Mid off for 6. It was left to Daddy Doogs and AC to see out the remainder of the innings, one in which the visitors had never really looked like reaching the required total.

The awards saw MC pick up the wAnchor hat for kicking a ball away from himself when fielding, and also questioning the umpire's decision not to award a no ball on his dismissal. Malorie collected the pink T-shirt for flinching away from a ball which wasn't actually that close to her. The man of the match hat went to Mog for his well made 50, although a nod went to AC for his excellent opening spell with the ball.
