Waverley Crushed by Oakley

Bowlers put to the sword, batsman not any better...

After a week off due to no fixture, Waverley took the trip done to Oakley for this weekend game. Unfortunately for Waverley they only had 10 players available for fixture due to Beanie dropping out sick, thus the team consisted of James Wright (Mongo), Adrian Day (Mog), Marcus Carmichael (MC), Si Brewer (KV), Will Knox (Baby Knox), Sam Tempest (Troy), Jamie Harris (Teabag), Dan Litwin (Chuckie), Adam Carmichael (AC) and Pete Brewer (Mr B). Due to a delay in the skipper’s arrival, Si went out to do the toss in his absence, duly lost it, and Waverley were fielding.

Opening the bowling was Litwin and Troy. Oakley's opening partnership came out aggressively and brought up the Oakley 50 in the 4th over, Compton-Bearne doing the majority of the damage. After his 2nd over Troy was replaced by Mr B, unfortunately the change of bowling had little effect on the scoring rate with Oakley bringing up the 100 opening partnership in the 8th over. Unfortunately Waverley were helping the Oakley openers continue their high scoring due to dropping chances in the field, (9/10 throughout the Oakley innings - with Knoxy Jnr with 3 of them). After 2 overs Mr B was replace by Teabag, still nursing his broken finger, but came in and bowled quickly and accurately to make the breakthrough in his first over getting Compton-Bearne for a destructive 94. At the other end Litwin was replaced by Mog who picked up the other opener. Unfortunately for Waverley the wickets did little to stem the flow of runs. After Teabag had completed his spell (the pick of the bowlers), he was replaced by AC who also picked up a wicket. Will replaced Mog and picked up a wicket for himself, but unfortunately the runs continued to flow. Troy came on to be the specialist death bowler and picked up the final wicket. The final score of 318-6 off 40 overs left Waverley a mountain to climb.

After tea, Waverley came out to bat requiring 8 an over to win. Waverley started slightly more circumspect that Oakley with only 1 run off the first over. But after 5 overs were 36-0, up with the run rate. Unfortunately that is where the positives end with a regular fall of wickets through the next 10 overs leaving Waverley 77-5 off 15 with only Mongo getting runs. When he fell shortly after drinks Waverley for 78, Waverley were 102-6 and the writing was on the wall for a 200 run defeat. Fortunately AC and Mr B put together an 18 run partnership to help Waverley reach 127, with AC second top scoring with 14 and Mr B third in the list with 8 Not Out. The Waverley scorecard included 4 ducks.Thus Waverley lost by 191 runs and the unbeaten start to the season brought to an end.

All that was left was for the awards to be distributed. Mongo got the Man of the Match hat for his innings, he also wore the Anchor Hat but as a team award for dropping 9+ catches throughout the game, Beanie was awarded the pink t-shirt for missing the game whilst sick, thus continuing the new brutal regime under the new skipper.
