Review of the Week

Weirs couldn't win the Greenwood Cup but did manage to end their run of Saturday league defeats.

Weirs faced West of Scotland again in the re-run of the Greenwood Cup Final on Thursday evening. Thanks to some great bowling from Zeesahn Qumar they had West in all sorts of problems at 55 for 8 but let them off the hook a bit as West made it 94 for 9 off their 18 overs. Weirs batting reply never really got momentum and although the result remained in doubt until very near the end, they fell short by 3 runs, ending on 91 for 8.

There was better news on Saturday as Weirs finally recorded two league victories against Glasgow Accies, ending a long winless run. The 1st XI dealt with Glasgow Accies impressively at Albert Park. Irfan Shah took 4 wickets as Accies were bowled out for just 122. Then Ibrar Akram made 29 not out and Ghulam Raja 39 not out as Weirs reached the victory target comfortably with 21 overs and 8 wickets to spare.

It was less impressive and less comfortable at New Williamfield as Albert Park struggled against a youthful Anniesland team. Anniesland batted first and made 279 all out. Leslie batted well for 112 but the Albert Park bowling and fielding were mostly terrible. In reply Albert Park fell to 70 for 4 and a surprising and embarrassing defeat looked likely. The Weirs second string did at least turn things around thanks to knocks from Inder Mahal (60), Myles Shields (59), Wajid Mohammed (33*) and Abid Raza (37*) which got Albert Park over the line for 3 wicket victory.

There was a victory (of sorts) on Sunday as Kelburne conceded the Sunday League game because they couldn't raise a team.
