Review of the Week's Results

By Colin Baxter

It was another poor weekend for Weirs with both Saturday teams heavily beaten. But they are in a cup final!

Weirs' familiar batting woes surfaced again at Albert Park where they were bowled out by visitors Renfrew for just 103. The top order collapsed completely as Weirs fell to 21 for 5 at one point. Only Ahmed Chaudhury with 36 played a substantial innings to at least help Weirs get to three figures. Renfrew had no difficulty in getting the small victory target, scoring 107 for the loss of just 2 wickets with nearly 23 overs remaining.

Familiar problems were also on display at Nunholm as the 2nd XI struggled to get wickets. Although Albert Park managed to take 2 wickets early on, a very lengthy stand followed between Davidson (110*) and Singh (71) which effectively took the visitors out of the game. Although the Albert Park bowlers generally bowled a decent line and length their bowling just lacks penetration against decent quality batsmen and the fielding continues to be an issue.

A fine spell of opening bowling from Armstrong reduced the Albert Park response to tatters at 31 for 6. A good 41 from Inder Mahal restored respectability and helped take Albert Park to 105 all out but it was another heavy defeat for the Weirs 2nd XI who have now lost 5 in a row.

Two days earlier though there had been some much-needed good news for Weirs as they got into the final of the Greenwood Cup, with a 33 run win over Kilmarnock in the semi-final. Weirs will now face West of Scotland in the final. The even better news is that the final will be at Albert Park.
