Tough Saturday for the Weirs Teams

Weirs 1st XI faced First Division leaders Kelburne at Albert Park. This would of been a tough test at any time but without Sameer Zia, Rouman Butt and Imran Syed for a variety of reasons Weirs looked to have a mountain to climb to win the game.

That was how it proved as Kelburne posted a huge total of 304 for 4, mainly thanks to a century from Willy Allan and 69 from their Zimbabwean pro Cephas Zhuwao. Weirs didn't help their own cause by conceding 45 runs and fielding shoddily.

Weirs battled hard with the bat in response but with a depleted team a target of 305 always looked like a very tall order. Weirs were eventually bowled out for 145. Irfan Shah, Ghulam Raja and Zeeshan Qumar all made it to the 20s but could make it no further. It leaves Weirs with 3 wins from their first 5 games; a decent start but this was a reminder that there is still room for improvement.

The 2nd XI faced what was on paper one of their hardest games of the season, away to St Michaels 1st XI. Again, the game proved to be as difficult as feared. St Michaels batted first and posted an imposing 254 for 6 off 50 overs. Zaheed Hussain and Abbas Arfeen picked up a couple of wickets for Albert Park. In reply Albert Park could only manage 92 all out and lost by 162 runs. But given the challenge in playing another team's first eleven, especially away from home, it's probably not such a bad result. The 2nd team also have 3 wins after 5 games and can reflect on a good overall start.
