Welwyn RFC Rugby for Everyone

NEW SEASON PREPARATIONS UNDERWAY

By Gary Peterkin

Since the end of the season, we have been busy preparing for a spirited comeback next season, including the recruitment of a new coaching team.

Lead coach James Coles (centre in picture with Gary Peterkin and Dene Miller) is Senior Community Development coach at local Premiership Club Saracens, as well as being a Saracens Elite Player Development Coach. James has also led the coaching programmes for Hertfordshire at both Under 16 and under 20 this season, as well as coaching Saracens Amateurs.

Dene Miller joins the coaching team after a distinguished playing career, including representation for local clubs Tabard and Old Albanians, as well as Hertfordshire, at Rugby Union, and a Rugby League career involving spells at St Albans Centurions and London Skolars, before culminating his career as Captain of Scotland A and representing the full Rugby League International side.

The team is complemented by the addition of Mike McKay, last year’s COLTs Coach and County Under 18 Manager, and former first team captain Austen Cox, who takes up the role of first team Manager after captaining the seconds to a Herts Merit league/ cup double last season.

On his appointment as Head coach James commented:

“Firstly let me take this opportunity to introduce myself as the new Head coach for Welwyn RFC and welcome you to a new opportunity at the club. I think it is fair to say that the last few seasons have been challenging for everyone involved. But that time is over. This season comes with a new opportunity and a new challenge. The opportunity is to get back to winning ways, the challenge is to restore pride into the Welwyn badge. All of this starts with hard work and that hard work is called pre season!”
To kick start the new season, The Welwyn ONE Club day will take place on Saturday the 23rd of June at the club. The morning will consist of introductions to the new coaches, club values and setting goals/expectations for the season alongside with a bit of team building, and will start from 11:30am. From 1:00pm onwards, the BBQ will be fired up, the bar will opened and family & friends are then invited to take part in a relaxed afternoon of fun games and good company.
All players are welcome from Under 18s to 5th team, as well as any non members wishing to take up, or indeed rekindle their passion for the sport.
