Welwyn kicked off with the slope and took an early lead after a minute with a Rory Harcourt penalty after an infraction at the breakdown. Verulamians had an opportunity to equalise almost immediately, but pulled their penalty wide, the first of three kickable penalties missed.
After 5 minutes Welwyn scored their first try, a Verulamians lineout was overthrown and David Wells gratefully took advantage to score, with Rory Harcourt adding the extras. Welwyn’s second try came a few minutes later from within their own half as Harry Gillespie spotted a mismatch in the backline and sprinted to score in the corner, just evading the full back’s covering tackle. Welwyn continued to press Verulamians in both attack and defence, and with the Verulamians kickers off-form were able to keep the pressure on, and this eventually told with Dan Comben and Rory Harcourt both scoring converted tries.
Verulamians did manage to get on the score sheet before the half with a penalty from an offside. Towards the end of the half, Harry Di-Lieto was sent to the bin, committing the first infraction after a team warning. He was joined on the stroke of half time by a Verulamians player. Welwyn took a 29-3 lead at half time, having already secured the 4-try bonus point.
The second half followed a similar pattern to the first, with Welwyn’s aggressive defence and powerful attack causing Verulamians many problems. Aaron Chandler scored the fifth try, before Ashley Dobney scored from a rolling maul at the lineout. Welwyn’s final try came courtesy of Rob Picken after a line break from Josh Milton and a quick ruck. Verulamians ended the game well, playing in Welwyn’s 22 and scoring a consolation try in the corner and almost a second try, but the winger ran out of space, downing the ball on the touch in goal line.
The final score was 8-46, with Dan Comben awarded Man of the Match. Welwyn are now just 2 points behind the joint league leaders Verulamians and Grasshoppers. Welwyn have a break from the league next weekend when they travel to Aylesford for the RFU Senior Vase.
