Welwyn 2nd team travelled away to Cheshunt in high spirits after their win against Hemel Hempstead with another strong team.
Although… Welwyn wouldn’t have it all their own way. Cheshunt won the toss and decided to play up hill in the first half. Pre match the hill was a key talking point to ensure full advantage is taken going downhill. Welwyn kicked off down the slope. Ball in hand was the issue in the first half with dropped balls over the line, losing the ball in contact, perhaps some over confidence played a part.
Nevertheless Welwyn would score first with Brad Wiles crawling over the line with a less than glamorous try. The conversion was missed. 0-5. Welwyn scored again with Ben Hunter crashing over the line. 0-10. Cheshunt pulled one back to leave the game 7-10 at half time. A very poor first half performance from Welwyn in general and advantage lost with the second half going uphill. Welwyn, fully aware of how confident Cheshunt would need to step up a gear if there was any chance of taking the win.
With Welwyn as a club able to field all sides with substitutions, changes were made to ensure everyone gets a fair amount of game time and welcomed a club debut to Nial Parkash at 9. Welwyn started strongly uphill with the pack proving dominant and setting the standard in the scrum pushing Cheshunt back on most occasions. The front row, consisting of Ross Dolan, Matt Gray and Cameron Patey were excellent.
With Welwyn’s pack so dominant and the backs breaking the line, they were next to score with Joe Burns going over the line to take the lead 7-15.
Cheshunt would then go on to score 2 tries with a breakaway coming from an interception on Cheshunts own 5m line 19-15. Off the back of another attacking scrum Welwyn retook the lead with Ollie Di-Lieto crashing over the line with support from the other forwards. Fitness was key for Welwyn who then ran in their final 2 tries, one from Harry Di-Lieto the other from Dave Francis who when crossing the line decided to take the post with him.
Final score 34-19.
Welwyn face Hertford 3s at Hobbs Way Saturday 30th September. With three games at home including the VETS it’s sure to be another exciting day for the Welwyn Rangers.
