Weymouth Ladies 1’s started the last game of the season knowing that their fate was already sealed with relegation from Premier Division 2B. This however did not diminish from their determination to make the most of the game.
Weymouth were under a lot of pressure for the first 20 minutes and it came as no surprise when Team Bath converted a strike from the top of the circle closely followed by a well rehearsed corner routine to take a 2-0 lead. Weymouth gradually came back into the game and were rewarded when Susie Stone took advantage of a free hit outside the circle, taking it early, dribbled into the D and struck it into the roof of the net to make it 2-1 at half time.
The second half was more evenly matched with chances at both ends. Another great interception by central defender Alice Craven created a counter attack as Craven coolly passed to Jacqui Ridlar who played a great ball through to Lynda Drewitt on the left wing. Drewitt spotted forward Emily Austin running through on goal and placed a perfectly weighted pass for Austin to place it into the goal with the goalkeeper nowhere to be seen.
The final whistle blew and Weymouth earned a well deserved draw. It has been a very challenging season but the morale and camaraderie between the Weymouth players has been admirable.
