Two victories for the mighty under 9's in one day!

By

Two well deserved victories against noisy neighbours Orrell and visitors Aldwinians for the Wigan Lions under 9's team.

Team: Charley (captain) Ethan, Sam Leonard, Sam Carelton, Adam, Joe Webb, Reece, James, Will, Isaac.

The young lions had a double header today on a hot stuffy day at Douglas Valley. Up first was the Aldwinians who put Wigan under some early pressure and they had to defend hard to keep the visitors at bay, but defend hard they did!

A fantastic solo try from the ever improving Sam Leonard took wigan into the lead side stepping and body swerving through their defence to cross the line. Aldwinians immediately went back on the attack and pressed Wigan back into their own half, yet again they had to defend hard. Aldwinians were a good attacking team but Wigan defended better and doubled their lead on the stroke of half time through a Sam Carelton's trade mark try.

The second started better for the Aldwinians and they scored very quickly in the second half, to keep them in the game. But Wigan have proved this year that they are not an easy team to beat, Ethan took the ball up some ten yards from the line and powered over for his first try of the match (it wasn't his last) to move Wigan two tries clear of the visitors. Aldwinians responded with an easy try from the scrum with a quick dash to cross over the corner, to move them within a try again. But Lion of The Match Ethan maintained Wigan's two try gap by stealing the ball and crashing over for his second!

Final score Wigan 4 Aldwinians 2

The second game was a high scoring game and Wigan got off to a great start when Charley Robinson crashed over in the corner. Other tries quickly followed from Isaac, Ethan (3rd) a long distance try from James with Orrell responding just once before half time again because of a missed tackle.

The second half saw James doubling his personal tackle by touching down in the corner, there was plenty of tackling from both sides in this game. Ethan added two more tries, making it a personal haul of 5 for the day, the first was a nice passing exchange between charley and joe webb and Ethan putting the ball over, his second another barnstorming charge to the line, the defence had no chance !

Orrell kept the game interesting with two tries of their own in the second half but they were no match for the mighty Wigan lions today.

Full time Wigan 7 Orrell 3.

Well done boys keep improving, keep looking and remind yourselves who is your team and remember your boys are winning games and the tries are starting to be shared out more and so is the work rate!
