Match report by John Rawson

Yarnbury 27-33 Goole – Yorkshire League 2

After last weeks defeat Yarnbury had four significant pack members back with both props Lewis Atha and Dan Penman returning alongwith second row Ian Maycock and number 8 Martin Rainey to partner the other young forwards in the scrummage and it showed from the start down the slope.Goole were under the kosh in the scrums and were driven off the ball on numerous occasions but saved by their impressive No8 Jamie Shand who managed to pick up on several occasions as the pack went backwards.Added to this Yarnbury missed several good chances to get over the line Ian Maycock and Martin Rainey held up while quick ball was not enough as both wings were bundled into touch on the last pass.Typically Goole took their first chance with a speculative punt up field caused confusion and they re-gathered for wing forward Robert Shand to take the space on the left to cross for the first score against the run of play and stand off Reece Moore converting from out wide left.

The game was too open and Yarnbury were moving quick ball in an effort to make space and finally got left wing Luke Cowley into space to touchdown .Stand Off Danny Pound could not make the distance for the conversion.Yarnbury pressure finally paid as Yarnbury took the lead breaking through the pack down the middle and wing forward George Bowen cross ing after backing up the play.Again the conversion was missed by Pound.

The home side were in the ascendancy in the forwards but poor kicking gave Goole the chance to move the ball through their backs and they created another overlap on the left for winger Richard Binnas to score in the corner. No problem for Reece Moore who added the impressive extras to regain the lead and No8 Jamie Shand managed to squeeze over again as the interval approached after anopther Goole attack and Moore converted to give Goole a 10 – 21 lead at the break. With the slope in their favour Goole pressed after the break and Yarnbury had some impressive defence on their own line but still conceded when second row Ian Maycock was deemed to stop the Goole forward with a high tackle which seemed harsh but after awarding a penalty to Goole the referee then decided a penalty try was deserved and Goole had a 10 – 28 lead and Yarnbury were looking at a defeat. with a man short for the next ten minutes.

This then turned into Yarnbury’s best spell of the match as the pack took control driving the game up the slope into the opponents 22 metre area. This coincided with the introduction of ex first team Captain and scrum half Oliver Cashman on at No9 and Cameron Newby out on the right wing showing his pace.Quick ball out wide right after the forwards battered the Goole line but were held up on several occasions resulted in Cameron newby finishing off two attacks with two tries both unconverted. Then the fifth Yarnbury try came to No8 Martin Rainey from close in as the Goole defence could not hold out and with Pound converting under the posts the game was definitely there for the Yarnbury win in the final five munutes with the scores at 27-28 and the momentum with the home side. Not to be as a slack pass looking for space on the right was snapped up by wing forward James Chantrey for Goole to score to make the final score 27-33 and Yarnbury were left with only two points for their five tries and a narrow defeat as the final try went unconverted.
