Machynlleth 2 : 1 Aberaeron

Aberaeron were left to rue missed chances and poor discipline in their defeat to Machynlleth on Tuesday night.
Boyed on by their win on Saturday Aberaeron started brightly and countered Mach's game plan which seemed to get the ball forward to their pace men as quickly as possible.
As the game settled down Aberaeron began to dominate and created chances which Mattie Davies capitalised on taking his goal well. Aberaeron should have pushed on at this point but poor ball retention and decision making across the park left the home side with a foot hold. Towards the end of the first half a half cleared corner by Aberaeron came fizzing back and hit the crossbar and down over the line and bounced back out but the referee didn't award it much to the howls of protest of the Mach supporters and Aberaeron took the first half a goal to the good.
Second half began much the same as the first half ended with Aberaeron failing to get a foot on the ball and running down blind alleys. Midfield was spread to thin and players didn't have enough support on the ball. Frustration crept into the visitors side as they gave away unnecessary fouls in quick succession and from the resulting free kick Mach delivered a ball into the box which looked to have been dealt with only for it to be volleyed home from the tightest of angles. Sensing this could be their day Mach pushed forward again as Aberaeron's second half display could not get out of first gear and after much pressure saw the ball fall to a Mach player who should've scored but for a fantastic save from the overworked Barry Edwards. Minutes later the same player hit the post and the ball travelled across the line and cleared away only for the referee to award a goal. Aberaeron pushed Sion Clarke forward in the dying minutes to try and salvage a point but things quickly got worse for Aberaeron. Clarke took the ball on the half way when a Mach player came through him from behind with a dangerous tackle. Amongst the tangle of limbs as both players tried to get to their feet the referee adjudged that Clarke had stood on the Mach player and showed him a straight red card.
Aneurin Roberts said after the game " We were unlucky as we could have been out of sight if we could have taken one more of the chances we created in the first half but fair play to Mach, they have a game plan and played the surface much better than we did. The boys are disappointed with themselves and their performance, they know they can produce much better than they put on show here so we will look for a reaction on Saturday away at Montgomery".
