United come up short away to Worksop Parramore

By Chris Munroe

Basford gave a battling performance Sat away to Parramore Sat but came up short falling 0-2.

Banged up Basford had to weather a considerable Parramore onslaught 1st period as the home side really looked to gain the intiative with some very good football.Despite the home side having all the 1st half major chances United were well in the game going in 0-1 at the break. The only goal of the half saw Parramore striker Sam Smith fashion his own opportunity before placing past Curtis MacDonald for 1-0 on 31 minutes and a class finish. United though struggled with a suitable formation against a dangerous opponent and all too frequent went long ball in search of the opening.
2nd period a switch to 4-3-3 and the introduction of a pace option Courtney Hastings saw a totally revitalised Basford who had the home side a little uncomfortable to say the least. Martin Holt planted a clear header over the bar and Theo Smith had a great chance to level the score but lifted over the bar from close range. The whole complexion of the game changed on 57 minutes. The home sides midfielder Eagers was red carded for a dangerous tackle on Theo Smith that called for extensive treatment. However whilst the match official was brandishing the straight red both sets of players took it amongst themselves to get involved in a midfield fracas that looked ugly with punches thrown. Not sure how much the officials saw and how they could determine who did what, but parity was restored as it was only Basfords Fabian Smith who was red carded and the other players from both sides yellow carded. Big dissapointment this as having gained the numerical advantage why Basford players should put themselves in danger of the officials levelling it up was not a sensible move. The dismisals appeared to hurt Basford most with the creative Smith in the stands. With a reshuffle required the home side delivered the killer blow 3 minutes later as Sam Smith found too much space to feed Whittingham who fired into the top corner for 2-0.
After regrouping Basford continued a very good second half showing and how the scoresheet was not breached is a big dissapointment. Striker TJ Nightingale who looks a revitalised character prepared to chase down everything, was desperately unlucky to do everything right but roll against the base of the post after being played through on goal. With other chances going begging United were confined to a defeat against a useful Parramore side.

The effort cannot be criticised on the day as like commented by Neil McGowan the players looked to have regained belief. However like Tuesday we are not getting much rub of the green at the moment and key decisons are going against us. In the absence of Mark Clarke on the day, pretty certain Martin Carruthers and Chris Freestone have a better idea of the needs must areas of the side, which are not many and nothing that a slight bit of fine tuning will sort.

Whilst two defeats on the bounce is a dissapointment it has been against two of the better outfits in the league, with difficult away trips to Thackley and Parramore. On top of that alot of injuries in key areas of the pitch has not helped the cause.
United are back in cup action Weds when the Notts Senior cup campaigh commences with a visit form NSL outfit Ruddington 7.45pm ko.Admission on the night is £3 and £1 for concessions.
