Broughton celebrate success at end of season awards night

By Mark Brown

Broughton Rugby celebrated success at their recent Awards Night as the curtain came down on a successful season for the club.

The Men's side, under the stewardship of Head Coach Stuart Thomson, won the BT East 2 title whilst remaining undefeated throughout the entire 18 match campaign.

Further silverware was added at their own Ballantynes 7s Tournament whilst they picked up the Bowl trophy at the Edinburgh Northern 7s, their first success at the coveted Inverleith Park event in some 24 years.

Broughton Women finished their National 1 season in third place, with a sea of new recruits experiencing rugby for the first time throughout the year.

Louise Forsyth's side bowed out at the semi final stage of the BT Women's Plate after losing out the eventual winners Stewartry Sirens.

The Awards ceremony, at the North Edinburgh club's Granton Road ground, saw players and members offer a standing ovation to Grant Hutchison who was presented with the President's Award for services to the club.

The following players were recipients of their respective awards:

Women's Player of the Year - Cat Robertson
Players' Player of the Year - Morven Murray
Most Improved of the Year - Erin Welsh

Men's Player of the Year - Casper Jones
Players' Player of the Year - Dan Smith
Most Improved of the Year - Gareth Duncan
Young Player of the Year - George Stedman

The loudest cheer of the night was for the recipient of the newly introduced Special Recognition Award. Vanessa Hagen was the inaugural winner much to the delight of her peers.

The tough tackling winger not only overcomes battles on the park, but continues to smash them off it too. The MS sufferer's season may have been cut short due to a knee injury but not before she made a return to her native German National XV side in a recent fixture against the British Army.

Both Men and Women's sides still have to opportunity to top up the trophy haul with a host of 7s tournaments over the coming weeks.
