Capital punishment for Glasgow Students as Women maintain 100% record

Due to Wardie being unplayable after a bit of rain last week, this East v West clash moved to Peffermill, where no fewer than 3 Women's matches took place on the day.

After a deluge of rain, some of which of biblical proportion, the match perversly took place in glorious sunshine and the visitors kicked off.

Broughton started off well and within 6 minutes, they had scored the opening try of the afternoon. Gaskell and Birt joined up to rip the ball from an isolated Uni forward and the turnover allowed Deans to brush of 4 tackles to get a try. After dusting herself down, Deans slotted the extras. 7-0.

Kinghorn got in on the action in the 21st minute and her quick thinking at a penalty, 10 metres out, say the Stand Off look alert, tap and go in unopposed. Deans got the conversion with the aid of the upright. 14-0.

Amy Neil took a blow to the head but she bounced back in style moments later as the pocket rocket raced in the corner for a try after being put in by playmaker Deans. 19-0.

Broughton were playing well and despite some valiant efforts, the Students just simply couldn't cope with the persistent waves of attack.

On the stroke of half-time Ivana McConnell was put in for a score after handy work by Ceri Lynn out on the wing. The Bonus Point was in the bag! 24-0.

The sides turned around and normal service resumed as Broughton breached the Uni whitewash again. This time it was Ciara Ni Choinneain who came up with the ball after a fine rumble by the forwards saw the Irish lass get over the line - the correct one this time after her 5 metre disaster at Morgan! Deans converted to take the score to 31-0.

McConnell got her 2nd of the day after Kinghorn despatched the ball into no-mans land behind the last defender. A quick run and collect followed by early pass put McConnell over and it was close enough to the posts for Deans to slot the ball through the sticks. 38-0.

Kinghorn by this stage was keen to exploit the gaps and weaknesses in the Student's defence and another kick through saw the Uni Full Back and Centre get in a right old fankle. The ball made its way out wide and Neil slid in to collect a well work score. Hugging the touchline, Deans produced a fantastic kick to push the Broughton total to 45 without reply.

Every dog has his day as they say and full credit to the Glasgow girls who turned up with 16, by now battle weary souls. Some lacklustre Broughton tackling and some dogged determination allowed Glasgow to sneak a score in the corner by one of the forwards. 45-5.

So, Broughton finish the opening round of fixtures top of the league and with the tightest defence in Scottish Women's Rugby, conceding fewer points than any other Club within the league set up.

Perhaps the highlight of the day was back at Wardie for the post-match shenanigans. Man of the Match Nuala Deans was driving and had to nominate for the honour of the pint to be drunk. Who better to take up the challange than her Mother! Suffice to say, Legend status has already been awarded by the Team!

Next week is a rest week for the team then it's off to Glasgow where the Students will return tonight to lick their wounds and await our arrival...
