National 1: Win against the Warriors sees Broughton go top in emotional day at Wardie

A bonus point win saw Broughton leapfrog visitors Annan Warriors to go top of National 1 at an emotionally charged top of the table clash at Wardie.

Ahead of the match, both teams lined-up to pay tribute to Broughton Club Stalwart Bill Blanch and Jim Murray, father of Vice-Captain Morven.

Broughton got off to the perfect start heading up the Wardie slope when Ashleigh Reid came up with the ball from a turnover scrum close to the Annan line and made it over the line.

Kerry Colthart then edged Broughton further ahead with a penalty from out wide to take the score to 8-0.

Annan responded and it was a fine breakaway try that closed the gap between the sides to one point.

As half time approached, Broughton delivered a double whammy with two tries in as many minutes. First saw Dani Downs drive home following some fine forwards play. Then, with the last play of the half, Laura Kinghorn collected her own chip and chase to go in under the posts. Colthart kicking the extras to see Broughton go in 22-7 ahead.

Playing down the slope and the low setting sun in the Annan eyes, Broughton collected their bonus point when Demi Brooks went over for the fourth home try of the afternoon. The Colthart conversion was good once again.

It was the same player who score the next Broughton try, benefitting from colliding with the base of the post to grab her brace. Another kick from Colthart was successful to make it 36-7.

The visitors rallied and ended with a couple of tries of their own to narrow the deficit however time run out for the Dumfriesshire to secure any bonus points.
