Tunbridge Wells 2XI 2 - 2 Burnt Ash 1XI

By

Ash were frustrated by the Tunbridge Wells' defence and some farcical umpiring to finish the season with a draw.

Ash travelled to Tunbrige Wells (TW) for their final match of the season. With captain Rachael Bennett absent, Lida Cunningham stepped up from her role as vice captain to take the reigns.

The first half was dominated by the visitors even though TW scored first from an individual effort by their star player, who looked more suited to their 1XI side.

Ash replied with some intense attacking play winning over a dozen short corners. Two were converted with good goals from Hannah Smedley and then Kathy Morrison. Ash were frustrated not to convert more; their routines were knocked by one member of the TW defence breaking early five times. However others came close with lovely efforts from Chloe Bush, Lida Cunningham and Loo Brackpool. Lizzie Craig was only denied by the post.

At half time the score stood at 2-1 to the visitors.

Ash knew the second half would be challenging. Jenny Ellis did a sterling job trying to contain the TW main threat down their left hand side and the Ash defence battled hard with some great saves and composed clearances by goalkeeper Lisa Cawsey.

Both umpires seemed to have lost the plot in this half, with many questionable decisions culminating with the award of a penalty stroke to the home side, which was converted. The umpiring continued to go downhill with them then signaling for the last two minutes....even though only 20 had actually been played. After some complaining from both sides they agreed they had it wrong.

Ash picked themselves up and contined to attack spreading the ball out well, across the pitch. They came painfully close with a couple of goalmouth scrambles, but were denied.

The match finished with a draw 2-2. Ash were disappointed but overall the season has been successful and the team look forward to the Kent Plate Final in a few weeks time.
