Broncos bring home awards

By Ryan Lewis

The Broncos were once again honoured at the North West Rugby League season launch!

For the third time now (and second year in a row) Bury Broncos took home the prestigious Steve Prescott Award for Community Engagement – a wonderful award which acknowledges the hard work done by the club’s wonderful volunteers in growing the game.

This is an award which honours those lads who stuck it out for the second and third teams last year - in particular all of those who were new to rugby league (even if not rugby!) and all of those with a bit more experience who also helped to show them the ropes - that is absolutely invaluable.

It also credits the great work done by all of our junior and youth coaches who are bringing through the future Broncos and instilling in them not only some fine rugby skills and discipline, but also raising them to be fantastic people.

Our first team were also singled out in coming runners-up for the North West Men’s League team of the year – a fantastic achievement, particularly in a year where Haydock have done (and continue in the challenge cup) to do incredible things. Although we fell just short of the playoffs and reaching the cup final the league a team of our age and a club based where we are really made them sit up and take notice - this time on the field rather than just off it!

The Broncos efforts in community engagement will not be slowing down any as we approach the 10th birthday of the club. With some fantastic junior festivals already having taken place in the local schools, disability rugby sessions soon to come and walking rugby sessions in the pipeline there are even more opportunities on offer for the people of Bury to give rugby league a try.

It's a little comfort in falling just short of something again, but shows just how close to something great we are with a bit more hard work when it finally pays off and know the attitude is there to get that done!
