Chard Town brought off the surprise result of the day with a well deserved win at Bristol Telephones who had not lost a game in their first season in the Toolstation Western League.
The first half saw Chard attack from the kick off with a Max Westlake shot on target and from a mix-up in the home defence the ball was in the net from a defender and awarded as an own goal on 3 minutes.
Some 7 minutes later a back pass allowed James Boyland, with swift reaction, through to score a second goal with the ‘keeper out of position.
Chard continued to have the best of the attacking play, with a corner on 35 minutes which saw Nick Jacobs shot across the face of the goal and a further effort by James Boyland just wide. For their part, Telephones won several corners dealt with by the Chard defence to allow the midfield to go forward with a Max Westlake shot to the home ‘keeper. Bradley Miles came off on 42 minutes with a leg injury and was replaced Liam Cleal, before a further effort by Ben-Salem on the half time break saw the ball in the net but the flag was up for a close offside decision.
In the second half, Bristol Telephones put the Chard defence under pressure and on 59 minutes a corner led to Leon Britton scoring with a diving header. They continued with several good attacking moves and a strong strike brought the best from Chard’s ‘keeper Jon Hill. The speed of Scott Jakeman and James Boyland continued to cause problems to the home defence but at the other end Bristol Telephones put themselves on equal terms from the result of a 70 minute free-kick that went into the goal off a Chard defender, for the second own goal of the match.
Chard’s ‘keeper Jon Hill was in position to bring off a further good save before the well-deserved winner came on 82 minutes. Scott Jakeman won the ball in midfield and put through an excellent ball for man of the match James Boyland to score the winner with an unstoppable drive from some 25 yards out into the top corner of the net. This ensured Chard came away with the three points with a great team performance against a strong side.
