Chasetown made a solid start and had the ball in the net when George Cater drilled the ball home only to be adjudged offside.
The Scholars also had a penalty appeal turned down for handball after half an hour.
At the other end though, Basford were denied by a Curtis Pond save onto the post. Then the hosts struck the crossbar from close range through Kieran Wells.
The home side eventually broke the deadlock after a period of sustained pressure, eight minutes before half-time. A James Reid corner was headed goalwards by Ben Hutchinson, and when that was blocked on the line former Scholar Ashley Grayson scrambled the ball home.
On the stroke of half time Chasetown deservedly level with a long range effort from Will Whieldon which flew in off the underside of the crossbar.
Chasetown made a positive start to the second half and Chris Baker and Whieldon both tested Saul Deeney.
Gradually the hosts took control and a combination of wayward finishing and inspirational goalkeeping from Pond kept the scoreline at 1.1.
In second half stoppage time Chasetown almost nicked the three points with a Whieldon corner kick that was headed goalwards by Nick Wellecomme and saved on the line by Deeney.
