Gillingham Town (4) v Clevedon Town (1) - Match Report

By

By Tony Merrett assisted by Eric Howe

Clevedon travelled to Hardings Lane to take on Gillingham Town on a difficult playing surface with former skipper Kye Mountford making a return to the team and conceded 2 late goals in a 4-1 defeat when they had looked capable of coming away with at least a point.

On 10 minutes Jake Harris collected the ball on the left before cutting inside and laying the ball off to Kye Mountford who played in Toby Yeates to shoot over.

Clevedon then had a worry when a stray elbow caught Ben Murray in the head and he was forced to leave the pitch to have the wound bandaged.

In the 16th minute Gillingham’s Harry Baker managed to get past Sam Downe down the right before attempting to chip keeper Sam Burgess but the Clevedon man did well to stand tall and collect the ball.

On 17 minutes Tyler Ashmead made progress down the right before passing inside to Toby Yeates who crossed into the box for Jake Harris to shoot and see Gillingham keeper Jamie Beale save well.

Clevedon had to be thankful to Sam Burgess in the 28th minute when Buddy O’Shea played Lewis Morgan threw and he tried to slip the ball under the keeper but Sam was alert and dived on the ball.

Clevedon created a good opportunity on 30 minutes when Man of the Match Toby Yeates did well to out-jump several Gillingham players and head the ball through for skipper Kevin Camargo whose shot was heading into the corner of the net before Jamie Beale dived to push the ball away.

Gillingham were taking advantage of playing down the slope by hitting long balls down the left and created a chance in the 35th minute when Aiden Chainey crossed into the middle for Harry Baker to turn and see his deflected shot go narrowly wide of the post.

Gillingham took the lead on 39 minutes when another cross from the left found Ashley Clarke unmarked at the far post and he had the time to pick his spot and drive the ball low into the corner of the net to give Sam Burgess no chance and make the score 1-0.

Clevedon came out for the second half looking to get back on equal terms and had a good chance on 49 minutes. Ben Murray played the ball wide left to Jake Harris who found Kevin Camargo and the Clevedon skipper played the ball through for Joe Hance to chase but Jamie Beale reacted quickly and raced out of his box to clear the danger.

Gillingham doubled their lead in the 53rd minute when they broke quickly down the left with Aiden Chainey who crossed for Harry Baker to slot the ball home and make the score 2-0.

Clevedon got back into the game on 59 minutes with an excellently taken goal. The ball was played into Kye Mountford and he had time to pick out Kevin Camargo in the box and the skipper volleyed the ball into the top corner of the net giving Jamie Beale no chance and making the score 2-1.

Clevedon thought that they had equalised in the 73rd minute when the ball was played wide left to substitute Archie Ferris who cut inside Aaron White and curled an excellent shot that beat Jamie Beale but to the disappointment of the visitors hit the crossbar and rebounded to safety.

Unfortunately Clevedon’s inability to find an equaliser was punished with 2 late goals. On 90 minutes substitute Elliot Bevins crossed from the left for Lewis Morgan to smash the ball home and make the score 3-1 and the same player scored again 2 minutes later when the ball was played through and although he appeared to be several yards offside he ran through to slot home and make the final score 4-1.
