FUTURE LIONS UNITED COUNTIES LEAGUE-PREMIER DIVISION
DAVENTRY TOWN (2) 6 v COGENHOE UNITED (1) 2
Daventry; T. Orosz 2, 20 Fitzgerald 67 Emery 72, 81, 89
Cooks; Dove 13, 88

With Harry Chipchase on crutches after his injury against Pinchbeck there would have to be a change to our starting line-up and Montel Dore returned after his holiday with Ryan Ansell moving into central midfield. Munya Matiyenga and Jamie Inwood boosted the bench to five. Daventry Town included no fewer than seven ex-Cooks in their starting eleven.
The afternoon rain had moved away leaving a muggy but dry evening and a zip to the playing surface as Daventry quickly got off on the front-foot. Taylor Orosz fed Kieran Fitzgerald to his right inside the first minute and he curled a ball across the area, but it flew beyond everyone and safely wide of Stuart Lutter’s far post. In their next attack we conceded an unnecessary free just to the right of our box around twenty-five yards out. Adam Creaney whipped it into the box and we failed to deal with it allowing Taylor Orosz to pounce and smash the loose ball high into the roof of the net from close range. Advantage Town with just under two minutes on the clock and just what they were looking for after failing to score in their last two games.
Dore got past Creaney on the left but his attempted cross went behind for a goal kick, then Ansell sent over a decent corner but Cogenhoe couldn’t make it pay. The Cooks were starting to look like they might get back on level terms and they did exactly that on 13 minutes as skipper Ryan Dove controlled a low ball in the box, held off his man and turned to hammer a low shot past Jack Harding and into just inside the keeper’s left-hand post. Great strength and finishing from Dove again.
Matt Long went past Dan Childs and sent over a cross that was blocked for a corner that Liam Tuck swung in and Dan Stevenson leant in to get his head on the ball, but he couldn’t get the direction he required to trouble the keeper. Down the other end Taylor Orosz saw his free-kick from a dangerous position hit the wall and go behind for a corner, but it wasn’t long before the hosts regained their lead. The warnings were there as Lutter got down well to save a low strike from Luke Emery at the near post and after we had struggled to clear the corner, Taylor Orosz was given too much time on the edge of the box and he was able to pick his spot with a low drive that gave the diving Lutter no chance as it found the corner of the net on 20 minutes.
Great work from Ansell on the left saw him play in a low ball for Dove who turned and tried to lay it back, but it was behind his intended target and Daventry cleared. Fitzgerald got his head to a Creaney cross, but pressure from Stevenson meant his header went well over the top. Rico Alexander slipped and Dove quickly touched the ball to Ansell, who played wide for Long who went wide of his man and unleashed a superb shot that was destined for the roof of the net, but for a great fingertip save from Harding to touch it over the bar. Cooks continued to show and Ansell drilled a shot wide from the left corner of the box but Daventry always looked danger on the break and Josh Melling had to make a perfectly timed challenge to stop Fitzgerald’s powerful run. Some serious pressure from Daventry had the Cooks defending deeply and Taylor Orosz drilled a shot that went straight across the six-yard box. Tuck became the first player to be shown the yellow card after a foul on Emery, but Creaney’s free-kick was headed out by Stevenson.
Dore switched wings and caught Childs out with a run down the right and crossed in low, but after getting a touch off a couple of players the ball ended up in the keepers clutches. Tuck whipped over a good cross that Ross Harris got his head to first, Dore pounced but his shot was blocked and then Melling put it back in the box but Daventry defended well and eventually cleared the danger. Tuck then played in a dangerous free-kick that Dove got up well to win but it went off a defender for a corner. Tuck played the corner in deep and Lowery dived low to head for goal just beyond the back stick but it went the wrong side of the post. As the first half reached its conclusion, Séan McBride became the second player to be booked after his late tackle on Childs in the corner.
Daventry went into the break a goal to the good, but Cogenhoe had pulled themselves back into it in an entertaining half of football.

It looked like The Cooks had made the perfect start to the second half when Lowery arrived late to stretch a leg out beyond the defender to steer the ball past Harding from a whipped in ball across the box, but the assistant referee raised his flag to rule the goal out for offside. I didn’t have the exact view the lino had, but I hadn’t even considered the possibility of off side to be honest.
Good defending from Barnell stopped Taylor Orosz getting into a shooting position after the striker’s pace had got him through the midfield while down the other end Long’s run won a corner that Tuck took, with Lowery getting up well to head, but it hit a teammate and went wide. Phil Cassidy went into the book for a foul from behind on McBride giving Dove a sight of goal, but his free-kick from a central position was too close to the keeper.
Cogenhoe were playing the ball about well and both Daventry full-backs made vital interceptions to stop us getting near their goal, while Harris was winning header after header as we played the ball up looking for Dove. The first change came just after the hour with Long coming off to be replaced by Tom Iaciofano who went into the centre allowing Ansell to move to the right. A beautiful knock from Ansell almost put Dore into a scoring chance, but Creaney did just enough at the vital time. A second change for the Cooks saw Jamie Inwood replace Tuck in a straight swap at left back on 65 minutes, but two minutes later the home extended their lead.
Their third goal did have more than an element of luck to it though as Kieran Fitzgerald hit a powerful shot from just outside the box that took a massive deflection off Lowery and looped over the now stranded keeper and into the far top corner. This was pretty much Fitzgerald’s last contribution before being replaced by Greg Anayitos on the left.
The contest was all but ended on 72 minutes when a big clearance was headed on by Anayitos to Luke Emery inside the box and it was a simple finish for the ex-Cooks striker with time and space on his side. The goal sparked the final Cooks sub with Matt Johnson replacing Ansell. Iaciofano had his free-kick taken comfortably by Harding then down the other end Lutter got down quickly to save Tommy McGowan’s shot following a short corner. The Cooks struggled to get the ball away from their area for a spell and a break saw Emery get back into the danger area and the home side had three shots blocked before the ball eventually went behind from Childs’ volley from outside the area on the left.
Dove picked up a booking with ten minutes left for an over-zealous challenge and a minute later Daventry added a fifth. Good work from Anayitos after his shot had been blocked, lobbing the ball back into the box where Emery got in front of Inwood to score at the far post for his second of the night. The Orosz brothers both came off, firstly Jordan for Jake Dumbleton and then Taylor for Jack Beasley as Aran Parkinson gave his subs a few minutes game time.
Inwood pulled the ball back for fellow sub Iaciofano, but he couldn’t keep his shot from sixteen yards under bar height, while Emery’s low cross was met with a first time shot by Creaney that went wide. Emery should really have scored again when he ran onto another big ball down the centre, but he miscued this time with just the keeper to beat.
On 88 minutes the Cooks reduced the arrears as Iaciofano battled well to hold off his man and slip he ball through to Ryan Dove who fired low past Harding for his seventh goal of the season. The four-goal margin was restored less than sixty-seconds later though as hesitancy in the box was punished by Emery as he nipped in to score from close range.
Cogenhoe kept going and Iaciofano found Dove to his right and the Cooks skipper sent a great ball across the box, but Harding dived to get his hand to it and divert it away from the orange shirts. Dove then turned his marker inside out as he cut into the box before whipping a low ball across the face of goal, but it was just too far ahead of Iaciofano and Johnson.

I’m sure those neutrals attending will have thoroughly enjoyed tonight’s game, as will the Daventry contingent, but some frailties in the Cogenhoe team were exposed by a pacey Daventry attack. There were plusses for the Cooks, but in truth we were well beaten by a side who should be up there at the end of the season. Daventry showed great team spirit to bounce back from being robbed at the death in the F.A Cup a few days before and went into the game all guns blazing from the whistle. In their team they have some real gems and they will score goals for fun at times if they aren’t marshalled correctly. Taylor Orosz would surely walk into any team in this division, while Luke Emery is a natural goalscorer who could top thirty goals easily if they can keep the supply up through the season. I also rate Adam Creaney very highly and was surprised to see him at right-back tonight. Ross Harris may be a veteran these days, but still reads the game so well which means pace isn’t an essential part of his game. He won so many balls in the air today he must have Mitre embossed on his forehead this morning!
As for The Cooks, Ryan Dove worked hard all game and deserves the man-of-the match award tonight, but he would have been much happier with a point I’m sure. Matt Long was looking sharp on the right at times and only a superb save stopped him from scoring in the first half, while it was good to see Montel Dore back in the side, but after a bright start he faded out of the game somewhat. Ryan Ansell also looked good in the first half while Tom Iaciofano really impressed me and seemed to link up with Dove really well after coming on. Alex Lowery had another decent game in midfield and may have been robbed of a goal as well. Going forward we actually looked OK, but we let ourselves down somewhat in our defensive duties at times, but that is something we can work at. Not many sides have the pace and attacking guile of Daventry, but the fact we have now let in six twice in recent weeks, there is obviously work to be done. No criticism for individual performances at the back and the midfield also have to take responsibility when our opponents have possession, while the front players must look after the ball better to take the pressure off. We are a good team going through a bit of a sticky patch at the moment and I know Jake Stone will get this sorted and have us playing the way we did during the latter part of last season. We have only had two players score for us this season which is a little concerning, with Dove on seven and Dore on two and we are relying too much on Dovey to bail us out up front at present with a bit of magic. The games don’t get any easier with a trip to Holbeach on Saturday but remembering how well we did there in both our visits last season, maybe this will be a kicking-on point for the team.
