Derby victory for the Mont

By

The local derby was a tough encounter with both team missing key players though injury, not that you could tell with all their replacements having admiral performances.

Millom got off to the better start battering the Egremont defence with Craig Wilson leading the charge. The Mont defence yet again held firm and on nine minutes Leon Crellin made break from half way to score a long range effort under the sticks, John Paul added the conversion.
The game at this stage was mainly being played at the wrong end of the field from JMB point of view with Millom camping out on Egremont line. This finally paid off on 22 minutes when Marcus O’Brien managed to get the ball over the line, with Paul Evans levelling up the score. In true Mont fighting sprite Kevin ‘dependable’ Brown was present to back up a classy Alistair Leak break to score the third. 10-6. Yet again Matty Palmer raised his game to meet the challenge much to the abhorrence of the Millom supporters with the ex-Millom player taking everything the Millom back line could hand out.
On 34 minutes John Paul Brocklebank showed some fancy foot work and several dummies to dance his way under the up rights to score, he quickly followed this up with the conversion. Four minutes later young Lewis Beckwith showing what it takes to play first team rugby when he stretched out to score, JP again making the conversion. Scores on the door at half time Mont 22, Millom 6.
Millom began the second half like they began the game, only this time they had the famous Egremont slope in their advantage. There was some bone crushing tackles with Lewis Beckwith demonstrating the old adage ‘the bigger they are the harder they fall’, with Craig Wilson on the receiving end. New comer to the pack Daniel Graham was outstanding and with performances like that he will only strengthen the side, well done big man. However, on 50 minutes Millom man of the match Marcus O’Brien scored with Paul Evans converting to make the score 22-12. Millom then camped out on the Mont’s twenty yard line with repeat sets not managing to break the Mont defence. Again, Rhys Davies organised his defensive line with true aplomb, with the Bewsher brothers playing well together in the second row. Both Ali and Dan swapping rolls seamlessly and young guns Ryan Barnes, Jack Murray, Leon Crellin and Jack Stainton were again immense in defence and attack.
The game breaker came on seventy six minutes when sponsors man of the match Kevin Brown carved his way through the Millom defence to put the Mont in prime position. Matthew Bewsher showed some nice football skills to chip the ball behind the Millom defence, which he quickly pounced on to score. Egremont repeated the move four minutes later only this time John Paul providing the kicking prowess for Matt to add his second, final score 30-12.
Many thanks must go to our match sponsor Dave Linklater for picking the following for their efforts during the game:
MOM: Kevin Brown
Top tackle: Lewis Beckwith
Champagne Moment: Jack Murray
Away next week at joint leaders Castleford Lock Lane.
All the best to the lads in the broken bone society, this run of bad luck on the injury front must end shortly.
