TOWN'S BOYS SEND BOOTS TO AFRICA

By Brian Flynn

OLD football boots donated by Faversham Town’s youth players have been given a new lease of life in Africa.

“It was a wonderful idea.” Brian Flynn, Head of Youth Development
Boys in the club’s youth set-up handed over pairs they had grown out of to their coaches so that they could in be sent to the NGO Dream Big Ghana’s football academy.
They were taken out to charity workers by friends of Under 14s keeper Oscar Sexton.
And within days, the boots were on the feet of boys and girls aged between 11 to 17 playing football in the villages of Dzita and Agbledomi in the Volta region of Ghana.

Lin Henson, who took the boots with her to Ghana along with other donated football equipment, sent back pictures of “some of the very chuffed recipients of the football gear.”
She added: “It will all be held by the coach and lent out every day when practice is on, and matches.”
Faversham Town's Head of Youth Development Brian Flynn, who helped collect the boots at training, said: “It was a wonderful idea and the boys were happy to help.
"The players love their boots and look after them really well, so when they grow out of them it’s great to know that they are getting a second lease of life and helping bring joy to a new group of children.”
Dream Big Ghana helps bring football to local villages in the country.
Football is very popular in Ghana, and promotes community development. In addition, higher education institutions offer scholarships to those with ability - so the sport can be a way out of poverty.
