Speaking after a 2-1 friendly defeat at Whitstable Town, Ryan said the larger squad had brought expectations of success - and preparations were going well despite the result.
Ryan, who played left back during the match in a depleted squad, said: "It was a good workout.
"You've just got to take pre-season for what it is. We've got five or six new lads. It's good to have competition.
"Pre-season is what it is - it's horrendous when you're a player. You've got to go out there and just put yourself through it.
"No-one enjoys, it but the more you put into it, the more you get out of it.
"As a team we should go out there and enjoy it. The pressure's there but if we embrace it we should go out and have a good season."
