North End kept up their 100% start to the season with a hard fought victory over Clitheroe on Tuesday night, thanks to a goal in either half.
They had to withstand some early pressure from the visitors, and Jason Hill put in a finely timed tackle on Kurt Willoughby just as he was about to shoot on goal. In fact the striker ended up kicking Hill, and ended up having to be substituted.
Gradually though, the Hillmen fought their way into the game, Courtney Meppen-Walter heading wide from a corner. However, Paul Phillips pulled off an important save in the 28th minute when Gonzales flicked a header goalwards and Phillips had to push the ball away whilst diving full length. The rebound was netted, but the player who headed home was given offside.
The lead came on 41 minutes. A free kick was curled into the box by Chris Baguley and Dale Johnson headed firmly home, downwards and into the corner, to open the scoring.
That lead was doubled on 58 minutes when another free kick was swung in. Many jumped, but in a sea of heads an arm clearly knocked the ball behind. The referee replayed the incident in his mind and gave Glossop North End a penalty. Meppen-Walter stepped up and blasted it home.
Clitheroe spent much of the remainder of the game trying to fashion a good chance, but the Hillmen’s stout defence held, just as it had in the season’s opener at Goole. Gonzales headed over and Ellison’s low shot was saved. However, it was the Hillmen who carved out the most clear-cut opportunity when Billy Hasler-Cregg got behind the defence. The goalkeeper was off his line quickly and saved with his body.
