Hugh MacKenzie

By David Hardy

Sadly I have to announce the death of another former player of Gorleston FC.

Hugh MacKenzie joined at the start of the 1950-51 and was in goal in the Norfolk Senior Cup final on 26th March 1951 at Carrow Road, where Gorleston beat Cromer 7-0, setting a new record score in the final of that competition, a record that still stands.

He was also our goalkeeper when we reached the first round of the FA Cup in 1951 losing 4-5 in a second replay to Leyton Orient at Highbury, Arsenal’s old ground, after drawing 2-2 at Orient, then 0-0 in the replay on the Recca.

Hugh was 88 years old and just about to celebrate his 89th birthday on 8th March 2014. He had been married for 69 years and they were looking forward to their 70th wedding anniversary in September of this year.

He had a bad fall on 10th January 2014 which resulted in him breaking his neck.

The funeral is due to take place on Friday 21st March at Tunbridge Wells Crematorium.

He is the second of the Gorleston Golden Team to die recently with Albert Vears also recently passing away.

Where next?

Great Night Had By All Secretary Ann Santon has expressed her delight following the victory over Norwich.
Sunday Best Gorleston FC would like to extend a big thank you to all the volunteers who came along on Sunday to help with some work at Emerald Park.
